We want to visit Florence, Cinque Terre , Pisa, Sienna, Assisi and the hill towns of Tuscany but stay only in one place. We will have a car. I was thinking maybe Pisa, Sienna or San Gimignamo. Or any other suggestion to a place that has easy access to where we want to visit. Thanks
Linda, How much time do you have? you have a pretty full wish list for a limited time. CT for 3 days, and Siena for the balance would be my choice. A Car is a great idea, though you might have to walk a little in Siena unless you plan well. Wow, have a great time! Jeff
Hi Linda. I agree with the others that you should stay in both places for a few days. The CT is a bit far to visit as a day trip. From Siena, the CT would be approximately a 3-hour drive (1-way). I would stay in or near Siena. Since you will have a car, you might consider staying at an agriturismo near Siena. It is a neat experience.
Although you will have a car, you should not drive to Florence. You should use public transit for Florence.
Good advice for Ct. The original plan is arriving in Rome, staying 4 days, take the high-speed train to Milan, stay 2 days, pick up the car go to Venice, 3 days, then about 10 days for Sienna, Florence, CT, etc. drop the car near Rome's airport, find a hotel there for the night and take the plane back home.
So we could stay 3 days in CT after Venice and then go to the Sienna region for the rest of the trip. So what do you all think of this plan? We will be in Italy for 3 weeks.
For another trip (maybe next year), we would do one week in Rome and another in the Amalfi coast region.
So, is this a good plan?
I would not recommend picking up the car in Milan; you're going to pay 3 days rental plus parking for a car that is of absolutely no use in Venice (unless it floats). Nor do you need it for Florence or CT.
My advice would be to divide your trip into 2 parts; with car and without. You can see Milan, Venice, Florence, and CT easily by train. If you go Venice -> CT -> Florence you could pick up the car when leaving Florence and use it to explore Tuscany/Umbria with a town somewhere in the region as a base.
As for dropping the car off in Rome and staying near the airport, most people here would advise you to stay in Rome and take the train or a taxi (if your flight is early morning) since the airport-area hotels are expensive and have no charm. If your flight is in the afternoon you could drop the car off the day before, stay in Tuscany, and take the train to catch your flight.
