Has anyone been able to find spots for free wi fi in Venice? We will be spending a week there and would love to have internet access.

Worth noting that whether it is free or not, you cannot freely access the internet in Italy. Due to anti-terrorism laws you need to essentially register with the provider (the restaurant or shop) in order to access. Some handle it differently, but it usually involves presenting an ID (DL or Passport).

Paying for WiFi usage in Italy, is no different than any other country. When you open your browser for the first time you will get a screen from the ISP provider giving rate and payment information. By using your credit card you are already identifying yourself.

It's just easier to use an Internet cafe and leave your laptop at home. You'll pay a charge for usage, and you will have to present ID, but it's more reliable than thinking you can find free Wi-fi.
