Yes, if your phone has WiFi, it will work with the WiFi anywhere. Ron in Rome's website has an article about finding WiFi in Rome: http://www.roninrome.com/equipment/how-to-find-and-use-free-wifi-hotspots-in-rome-italy Note that it's pronounced "weefee" in France (not sure about Italy). However, text messages do NOT normally go via WiFi. Texts (called SMS in Europe, for short message service) go via the cell phone network, so you can't send a regular text on a non-GSM phone. I believe there are apps that can send texts via WiFi; test these at home before you try to rely on them in Europe.

Harold is correct. There are some services that will let you compose a text message and send it over the Internet. Google voice does, too.

Skype will send text messages (along with their usual ability to use "voice" to call anyone in the world, on Wi-FI) I have not used Skype to send a text message over the internet, but supposedly this can be done. What an advantage to someone with kids! And Skype is really cheap. It would be great to hear from someone who has used Skype in the EU to text friends in the U.S.. and what the average cost was. There are also other ways to do it; according to this Wiki; http://www.wikihow.com/Text-Message-Online

It's "weefee" in Italy too and you will find it at hotels and many bars and cafes. If you have trouble, Starbucks and McDonalds are always wifi options.

new to wifi, new to skype, just tried a bunch of different wifi places and skype wouldn't connect to echo for me. Was hoping i could use this in Europe but maybe not... Phone: "Boost Sam Gal Prevail, And 2.3.6, Skype 22.8.0.920, can't make wifi calls - USA / USA at the moment. I have $10 credit.(9.92!) went to a number of different wifi spots (mcD, Galeria mall, Star$, etc), put phone in airplane mode, connected to a strong free wifi, tried to call Skype echo. No joy. Just rang many times and then stopped. Thoughts? Thanks!

When you connect to a free Wifi hotspot in a place like McDonald's you often have to read and agree to a legal disclaimer before you can actually use internet applications. So after your device connects to the signal, open your browser and you will see this disclaimer on the screen, agree to it by checking the box. After that you can use Skype, check email, and browse web sites etc.

YES! the error was all mine. I also found that the little Dolphin Browser is good at picking up that initial agreement. Opera didn't do it for me. I had success at a McD and a Starbucks, and in both cases it was then easy to make the Skype echo call Thanks! and YAY! Kris
