Why long queues at colosseum despite the time-slotted ticket system

Hi,

i am confused by reading and watching everything on the internet about the Colosseum queue. i understand that the queues may be long for the people who want to buy the ticket personally at the counter but if I have already purchased the ticket for a time slot I should be able to enter the Colosseum at the right time, right?
if I cannot then basically my ticket becomes invalid, no?

can you please clarify this?

There is a first line up to buy tickets. And there is a second line up to go through security before you get inside.

When you pre-buy your tickets online, you can bypass the first but not the second. The sheer number of people causes the delay. You have a timed admission, but there is no timed exit. Once people get inside, they do not have to leave. You will have to queue up to buy a souvenir, for prime spots to take a selfie or to use the restrooms. Good luck.

There is an initial ticket check to determine whether you are close enough to your entry time. Once you are at the allotted time, there is a formal ticket ckeck - be prepared to show your passport to verify you're the person named on the ticket. Then there is the security check, which includes putting your day bag through a scanner.
