Why is there no water in the Trevi Fountain today?

I was looking at a live webcam of the Trevi Fountain today (September 16) and it looks like the water has been drained, and some workmen are walking around in it. Does anyone know if this is temporary, or if this is a long-term situation? I hope it's flowing when I'm there later this year! Thanks!

Hmm, last year in the month of September, the water was drained for workers to perform maintenance. Maybe they do this at this time of year every year? Just a guess really.

Both times I went to Rome so far, Trevi Fountain was flowing beautifully in December.

I looked on TA to see if there were any traveler reports. So far, the first week of September still had water flowing. Could be something happened -- maintenance or maybe they needed to clean it for some reason.

On another note: this from TA visitor. It is true. "don’t try to sit on the fountain or you will get a swifts whistle from the police"

When I visited the Trevi a few times, the policemen's whistle really got a workout. lol. They don't mess around. A couple of things -- they don't want people sitting on the fountain's edging or perhaps even falling in.

A couple of Januarys ago, we got great photos of workmen in boots scooping up buckets of coins & doing spot scrubbing. Think of it as a glass half full :)

Thanks, Girasole, and Stewart&Vicki for your reassuring answers! I was hoping it was routine maintenance, but did not know how often that happened.

Ok, so looking at the Trevi Fountain webcam again, it seems the workmen are still there --- focusing on a particular part of the fountain's edge (middle.) I am not sure if there is a drain there or the edging sustained some damage.

Hopefully, they will have fixed the issues so people can enjoy the flowing waters again.

Our first day in June, there was no water. It was June 24. Maybe it's a monthly thing. We went back other days, and the fountains were flowing.
