Considering that the other countries in Europe tagged with a yellow warning level by Canada include Germany, France, Belgium. Britain, the Netherlands and Spain— Italy has lots of company. A yellow warning follows green( normal) and is not as serious as orange or red. It simply means “exercise`a high level of caution in transportation hubs, places of worship and crowded public spaces.”

The U.S. State Department also has a yellow warning for travel to Italy— and it has since 2022!

Take a breath, its OK. Just about every country in Europe is at a yellow (2) level. Boggles my mind, when they still consider the US a green (1) level. Maintain situational awareness. Take the usual personal security measures. Keep up to date with the news, especially in the areas you are travelling through. Enjoy your vacation, just dont put your brain in neutral.

I pay zero attention to these lists, which place Western Europe on the same danger rating as actual war zones. They are insane.

The chances of you being involved in a terrorist incident in Italy, or anywhere else in Europe, are so close to zero as to be negligible. You do not have to exercise a high degree of caution.

The biggest risk of danger is sunburn, followed by walking in front of traffic - yet day after day we see people ignore this.

Don’t worry about those silly lists prepared by government officials after a night of excessive Molson consumption.

The risk of being terrorized by a bear while in Canada is way higher.

Enjoy your trip to Italy. Just avoid Italy (and southern Europe in general) from June through September if you don’t want to risk a heat stroke. I’ve been dying of heat this past week between Lisbon and Florence.

Just came back. I wore a bulletproof vest and it allowed me to relax and have the best time of my life!

I met a fellow traveler at the Vatican and she chose to wear a gas mask. We decided to grab a coffee and one thing led to another. Call us crazy, call us old fashioned, but we are getting married this fall!

"The risk of being terrorized by a bear while in Canada is way higher."

Don't forget Cougars, This video was taken in the U.S. but the same sort of thing happens here in B.C. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ktRhBcHza4 . There is also the risk of bears, even in urban areas.

Regarding the travel warnings, I always check the Government travel website, and it does provide some good and relevant information. However I suspect that some of the warnings are intended just to cover all the bases (the CYA approach). If they didn't list all the possibilities and something happened, they'd be criticized strongly.

it would seem that the Canadian Government advisories are about as useless as those from USA!

I just did my "compare what you already know" test , Their ratings are UK, including Northern Ireland, every square inch right up to borders is rated yellow (like most of western europe). Republic of Ireland, every square inch right up to border is rated green. And days before that rating was dated we have this https://www.irishnews.com/news/northern-ireland/what-we-know-about-the-extremely-significant-bomb-intercepted-at-irish-border-KCGEKDIXJFFEZJFHNOINWG3PMY/

but on the question of security across europe, the word terrorism is a variable concept. In UK it is basically based on the thought process behind a crime. Other countries will have their own definitions. But many european countires are now using it to avoid the phrase "act of war". There have been a number of very serious incidents linked to Russia and if they are prepared to use nerve agents in a busy tourist locations like London and Salisbury or put bombs on DHL cargo flights who can say what will happen next. (What do you mean your local news never told you about that.....?). And is only a few weeks since Italy expelled a number of Russians for spying.

I find most of those lists ridiculous; if you do not tell me what I should be looking for, what I am supposed to do? Their main aim is discharging responsability should anything happen.

I still remember an exchange when I was a little child and my father drove an old and respected aunt for a trip around Como lake. He was driving when she saw a road sign: "Beware. Rockfall". She went into alarm and began complaining to my dad: "You are bringing me in a dangerous place!". To which my father replied: "Open your umbrella then".

A yellow alert for Italy? While the USA harasses foreigners and detains tourists? I’m an American who’s been traveling internationally since the age of 3 and have never needed those warnings about Europe, and only those about the Middle East vaguely in passing. The USA state department had warnings about travel to the EU after 9/11 even when their own security apparatuses were practically non existent. I’d take those warnings with a grain of salt. You’re going on vacation to relax, not to be “aware” of some fake propagandist government claim about another country. Believe me, if we could my wife and I would stay in Italy forever and never return to the hellscape USA where she has to carry her Italian passport and her green card around 24/7 for fear of being illegally detained, because those things happen on the daily here in the USA. Retirement can’t come soon enough.

@ L’Americano:

I think this warning came from the Canadian government not the US Dept of State. In any case for Government Bureaucrats it is safer to mark a country yellow rather than green. Because if something bad happens their arse is covered, they can always say they warned people with the yellow warning. Whereas if something bad happens and they had that country “green” then they have a lot of explaining to do. That’s the nature of government bureaucracy dynamics.

Tell your wife to leave her Italian passport at home. All she needs to carry is the PRC (Permannet Resident Card), or Green Card, which is now reverted to green again (when I had one, in the 1990s, it was pink). Carrying the PRC at all times has always been mandatory for permanent residents and that is sufficient to prove your immigrant status. My dilemma is how to prove I’m here legally since I have become a U.S. citizen. The only ID I carry is my Driver’s License, but in California and many other States a DL is issued to undocumented immigrants too, so it would be of no use to me if I’m stopped by ICE. I guess I’ll need to carry my US Passport at least when I go to Home Depot.
