Kathy,

Daughter and family just flew home for a three week vacation. She's an aquatics director for three facilities north of Naples. She has been unable to fill one of her pools due to the drought. They were actually using helicopters, from one pool to put fires out. Evening rationing on water has been going on for three to four weeks.

Thanks for the post, Gerri! Yes, the drought just goes on and on with no end in sight, it seems? Sure wish they'd get a healthy stretch of rain to help with the dwindling water supply and many fires in some regions.

I am in Venice right now and it is very hot and humid. I am managing by going into air conditioned spots or popping back to my hotel for a nap or some cool air. I have, however, decided after this trip to abstain from traveling to Italy in July and August.

I heard reports from friends at the Costoli public pool in Florence, that swimmers come out of the pool totally dry. No need to use towels.

Nothing new under sun. It was always hot in Italy in summer. With global warming is getting even hotter and for longer time. It's even hot in Central Europe. Temperature close to 40 degrees Celsius (almost 100 Fahrenheit). 26 years ago I moved to Pacific Northwest from Pennsylvania to avoid hot and humid summer. Well, global warming is not skipping us here either. Tomorrow is supposed to be 103 Fahrenheit. How glad we are that we have AC which historically was not needed here.

Yesterday the thermometer in my car, parked under the sun by the new opera house in Florence showed 49 °C (that is 120 °F). When moving, it stabilized around a more normal 41 °C (106 °F),

IIja, my first trip to Italy (many moons ago) was in July and if I hadn't been so darned excited to be there, the heat probably would have gotten to me more than it did. Then again, I was younger and tougher than I am now. :O)

Tomorrow is supposed to be 103 Fahrenheit

I heard that on the news this morning!!! That's just crazy hot for your part of the country!

Don't know about Italy but I'm sweltering right here in Oregon - yesterday 102, forecast for next 3 days 109, 106, 97. And, by the way, I do not have AC in my apartment because this is unusually hot and normally it's not really needed, at least not for me. That being said, if I have to be sweltering, I'd rather be in Italy. :-)

I am in Milano now, and it's way too hot for me - and I have lived in Miami and Las Vegas. It's about 40C right now. Lakes Como and Garda are dangerously low, all kinds of detritus are being uncovered as the water recedes.

Live like a local!

Heat? It's the humidity that's awful. I live in Phoenix. June's 115* is very hot but not humid. When the monsoons roll in in July until September it's 105*+ with humidity, rain, wind and dust.
We'll be in Venice and Rovinj in late August, early September. I'm so exciting about the trip that I'm sure I'll tolerate the humidity. Just have to remind myself to wear my happy face, buy lots of deodorant and you don't have to shovel sun.

I'll second that, Nancy!

Ooh, any interesting detritus, Zoe?

Nancy, before I had AC I tried to escape heat wave to Mt.Rainier and it did not help. Even in elevations over 6000 feet was still hot. But what worked was escape to Olympic peninsula Pacific Ocean beaches. P.O. works like a huge AC. And you have it there only 47 miles. Less than one hour drive and you are from hot hell in cool heaven.

Ilja, you are right, I looked at going to the mountains but it's no better there. Best option for me is to 'escape' to the coast, which I will do tomorrow and maybe Friday. I tend to drive to the coast 1 or 2 days a week anyway - just can't stay away. Yesterday and today had too much to get done before my month long trip to Minnesota starting next week. Another one of my favorite ways to escape, if only for a couple of hours, is movies - thank goodness for air-conditioned malls and movie theaters.

But I'd still rather be in Italy.

I love the Olympic beaches. We don't have sea stars or anemone where I live.

We had a record-setting hot summer in Roma when we moved there in 2012. Thought I would die. Then a few years not too bad, barely above 32 Celsius. 2015 and 2016 were tough but nothing like this year. Frozen fountains in winter and record heat and drought now. So glad we moved back to OR last year. (Living by the ocean we are staying cool versus PDX and SEA.)

But we will be in Italy by mid-September. Hope the rains come soon!

When we were there a couple of weeks ago, the temps were around 98 - 100. We don't normally take advantage of the hotel a/c, but there were a few nights when we did. (Well, DH did. I grumbled and burrowed down under the covers.)

Wow-who knew Oregon got that hot? Thanks for taking one for the team. Birmingham AL low 71(66 2 days ago-record low!) high 87 downright pleasant! And of course everywhere we go has way too much AC!

Portland was hotter than Phoenix today. Amazing!

We used to live in Vancouver WA. In about 1985 on Memorial Day weekend the (Columbia River) bridge was raised to let a ship thru and expanded in the 100* heat. Fire boats had to hose it down so it could be lowered and traffic could move again. Luckily we were on the Oregon side before then, headed to Lake Shasta.

Kathy, I'm heading to Mpls next week to spend time with family and revisit my home town. My brother texted me today that it was in the 60's there, I was so jealous. I looked at the forecast for the next couple of weeks and it looks like 80's and a chance of rain now and then. We haven't had real rain here in Corvallis since the beginning of May. Getting kinda crispy here.

This seems to be an unusual year for weather events in many parts of the world, with extreme heat and droughts in some areas and heavy rain and flooding in other areas. I have to wonder if these events are isolated or whether we can expect these from now on?

We're also getting extreme heat in this area, although that's not totally unusual as that's a typical Okanagan summer. Many days lately have been about 38C / 100F and there's no end in sight. That wouldn't be too hard to tolerate, but smoke from the many wild fires is making life difficult for those with breathing issues.

If I have to tolerate temp's like that, I'd also rather do that in Rome. At least I'd be able to take a siesta in my A/C hotel in the afternoons.

The smoke from the BC fires is so thick here in the Puget Sound region, its impossible to see across and view any mountains or see any land at all on the other side of the Sound ( 3 miles)

Joe,

Sorry about that, but there's not a lot we can do about it. We suffered the same thing here a couple of years ago with fires in eastern Washington.

"I want you to know that two weeks ago the country of Chile had record freezing temperatures with snow in July."

That makes perfect sense as winter starts in the southern hemisphere on June 1, so that's normal weather in Chile at this time of year.

Good joke, Roberto,
I am sure that Snow Mountains in Australia got some snow, too, not to mention Mt.Cook in New Zealand and we have only beginning of August. Deniers of global warming will certainly use this as an argument against it.

I commend to your attention Normandy, Brittany, the Channel Islands and the southern coast of England. I don't remember the last day I wore my lightweight hot-weather cotton slacks, though I beleive it was hot in Bayeux on the day I took my full-day Overlord tour to the D-Day sites. Although I might normally be unhappy about the lack of sun, I'm having no trouble remembering June and early July in southern and central France. That was enough heat for any one vacation, and I know Spain and Italy were worse.

Nancy, it's 64 here in my Mpls suburb this morning but they'd said on the news a few weeks ago that we'd had more 90's than Atlanta at that point this summer. We've also had several long, dry spells when lawns started to get pretty crunchy. Will be a cool-ish weekend in the mid-to-upper 70's, and I'm looking forward to throwing the windows wide open!

Will cross fingers for you that temps and humidity next week are both pleasantly moderate.

Speaking of humidity, here in midwest farm country, just one acre of corn gives off 3,000 - 4,000 gallons of water per day in evapotranspiration. They estimate that for Iowa (my home state) that's a total of 'round 49 to 56 billion gallons of water daily that adds 5-10 degrees to the dew point. Tropical-range dew points up here are not unusual, and can make even low 80's feel miserable.

Posted by

Ilja,

I suppose it depends on what criteria is being used. According to Wikipedia.....

"Therefore, for temperate areas in the northern hemisphere, spring begins on 1 March, summer on 1 June, autumn on 1 September, and winter on 1 December. For the southern hemisphere temperate zone, spring begins on 1 September, summer on 1 December, autumn on 1 March, and winter on 1 June."

Calendar-based dates are apparently different.

Ken, there is so called astronomical definition of summer which is very precise. Summer starts in northern hemisphere (and winter in southern hemisphere) when the sun is the farthest north upright above your head which is the Tropic of Cancer and that's on June 21st. Then there is so called a meteorological definition of summer which was agreed it would be June 1st. But it as well could have been June 2nd or even July 1st. Sometimes here around Seattle June is so cold that people renamed it into Junuary.

Zoe is in dire need of a sweater in London.
San Francisco's temperatures are back at the high 60s F (20 C) during the day and high 50s F (14C) at night.
Chile is getting snow in July.
My ice cube container in the freezer is getting fuller too.
What more proof do you need that global warming is a hoax?
We are approaching a new glacial era over here and you guys worry about when the astronomical winter starts.

I know Italy is in desperate need of cooler temps and rain. I just pray the drought doesn't break when I am there Oct 21-Nov 3rd.
I have a terrible track record for brining rain with me on vacation! I can deal with rain in Florence but hope for dry weather in Tuscany and the Amalfi coast for the first half of my trip!

Jay - you should be fine regarding. I find by mid-August things calm way down here heat wise.

This whole week has been really warm and humid (AC has been on pretty much every day). Took my poor doggie out this morning about 8:50 am and by the time we got home 30 min later we were both fairly hot!

Escape to Denmark!
They've been struggling to have a 'summer day' (over 77F/25C) this Summer, only two locations in Denmark crept over the threshold temperature and August isn't looking too much better.

https://www.thelocal.dk/20170801/denmarks-august-forecast-is-as-depressing-as-julys-final-figures

Although he said it was too early to predict whether September might deliver the summer weather Danes are so desperately yearning for, it isn't terribly likely. In short, Larsen said 2017 would go down as a year without a summer.
