Which way from VCE into Venice on a Friday morning?

I'll be flying into Venice late on a Thursday night in a few weeks, sleeping at the Parkhotel Annia close to the airport. The next day, probably mid-morning, I'll take the hotel shuttle a few minutes back to the airport and then head into the city, aiming for Pensione Guerrato on the San Paolo side of the Grand Canal, just north of Rialto Bridge. I'll have a carry-on size roller bag (packed light as per our drill) and a smaller bag across my shoulder. I'm looking for advice on which option to take:

Option 1 is the Alilaguna orange line direct to Rialto, across the bridge, and walk a few blocks to the hotel. Advantages are one direct trip and the enjoyment of a boat ride across the lagoon. Disadvantages are the longer walk across the crowded bridge and reports that the Alilaguna boats are slow, crowded, and uncomfortable (i.e. not so enjoyable).

Option 2 is ACTV bus #5 to Piazzale Roma, then vaporetto #1 to Rialto Mercato, and walk a few blocks to the hotel. Advantages are a shorter simpler walk at the end and potentially more comfortable rides. Disadvantage is the transfer at Piazzale Roma from bus to boat.

Cost is essentially a wash. I'll be getting a vaporetto pass later, but don't want to deal with that till I'm checked in. Water taxi is too expensive. So which option do experienced VCE-to-Rialto-neighborhood travelers suggest? Anything special about Friday morning or mid-day that might make a difference?

Bonus question: Anyone stayed at Parkhotel Annia? Experience to share there?

We have done the Alilaguna a couple of times and it was a bit ordinary.

Now we take the No 5 bus and vaporetto. Given you are returning to Marco Polo in the morning, you could buy your vaporetto pass at the airport then.

If you get the hotel shuttle, if you can get let off at a stop for the No 5 bus after it has left the airport, you just have to pay regular bus fare, not the exorbitant airport fee. That stop is called Tessera and it is across the road from the Marriott. And why not get a vaporetto pass when you get off at Piazzale Roma, then take the No 1 boat to Rialto Mercato, close to Pensione Guerrato. The Alilaguna boat drops you at Rialto, then you have to walk around and over the bridge to get to Pensione Guerrato. The Alilaguna boats are not the most attractive boats. Low in the water and salt-encrusted windows.

You'd need to buy an ordinary bus ticket for 1.50 EUR at the airport when you arrive.

If you do get the bus at Tessera, make sure you have coins to pay the fare. I have seen bus drivers and vaporetto fellers hit with a 50 euro note; it’s not happy.

We've done Option 2 many times. Easy-peasy and inexpensive to boot. At the airport you can get a vap. pass with a bus ticket added on to simplify matters. Transferring from the bus at P. Roma to the vap. is a very short walk. Piece of cake really. Can supply detailed instructions and directions from bus to vap. and from vap. to hotel if needed.

Another vote for the bus - I've ridden my last Alilaguna.

They do have shared water taxis. It was wonderful to arrive by water. We stayed at Pensione Guerrato, so it was a quick walk from Rialto Mercado. I got a discount on the water taxi. It might have been through Travelzoo, Groupon or something similar. I just googled 'Venice shared water taxi' and I found https://www.venicelink.com/en/products/shuttle. I'm sure there are other discounts out there.

It isn't a matter of "blocks" however defined, from the Rialto Mercato stop to the Pensione Guerrato. A matter of a few yards. Follow the directions they provide and it is very easy. Read the names of the calles very carefully.

It is in the S Polo sestiere (not Paulo). I don't often hear compass directions used in directions in Venice, more usually major landmarks. Rialto Mercato is on the Ferrovia (train station) side of the Rialto Bridge, as opposed to the San Marco (St Marks) or Accademia side.

We took the Alilaguna orange line from Marco Polo into the lagoon a couple years ago. While it was novel (where else can you ride a boat from the airport to your hotel), it wasn't as quaint as we had imagined. You really can't see out the windows from the passenger cabin (even if they were clean) because you sit so low inside the hull and the windows are up high. I probably wouldn't do it again...

If you do decide to take the Bus/Train, your hotel is only about a 20 minute walk from Venice S.L. and/or Piazzale Roma. A word of caution about the vaporetti - the stops near the train station/piazzale Roma, Rialto and San Marco can be tortuously crowded.

Bus 5 was the easy and low cost option if you don't have much luggage (carry-on that you don't mine carrying on your lap).

Awesome feedback, much appreciated. Looks like the bus and vaporetto, Option 2, for me. I didn't want to start using the 72-hour pass too soon in the trip since I'll be there longer, but looking day by day I think it will be OK to get it at the airport and start using shortly after.

I'm still open to contrary advice, and I'll check out the potential for a shared water taxi though not too optimistic about that.

Anyone have experience with Park Hotel Annia next to the airport? I chose it over Marriott because it was closer and cheaper, but maybe there's more to consider?
