Which Venice Neighborhood in May

As you can see I almost never post here, but I read the forums a lot and have been given so much valuable information from all who post. Thank you!

My husband and I (73 & 68) have been to Venice 3 times and love it! Our first time was a cruise in 2012 in mid-May. In 2018 and 2019 we went in November and stayed at the Foscari Palace Hotel in Cannaregio. We loved the hotel and location, but we’d like to try another hotel. We are returning the second week of May 2023 for 4 nights. Looking at hotels in the 350-450 Euro/night range.

We are presently booked at the Carnival Palace hotel in Cannaregio in the quiet Jewish ghetto area. My concern is that it is a little too far from everything. I am considering the Hotel ALA near the Fenice opera house. I am expecting more crowds in May then we had in November, but we will be there mid-week. We love to walk around, but would like the convenience of a nearby vaporetto stop and close to restaurants. (In case my knee starts hurting)

Will the Carnival Palace be too far from everything or should we keep it for the tranquility. BTW, we arrive and depart Venice by train.

Any suggestions or feedback would be much appreciated, thank you.

We stayed at the Carnival Palace in 2018 and loved it. It is indeed quieter and I wouldn't give that up! It is a very nice hotel, and the proximity to the train station is another major plus. The Tre Archi Vaporett (22) is right there and takes you around the "back" of Cannaregio, which frankly is also quieter and easier in many cases than, say, straight down the Grand Canal. The 4.1 and 4.2 are also right there, on the other side of the canal using the Ponte dei Tre Archi. Again, like the 22, they only go around the "outside" rather than down the Grand Canal. So that's one thing you are trading off. But if this is your 4th time in Venice your interests may not be up and down the "main drag." I guess think about where you want to go and look at the maps.

There's a cluster of at least seven or eight restaurants lining the canal right up to the Carnival, so you will definitely have places close by to eat. Probably my only criticism of the location is that they all seemed petty interchangeable and standard. Maybe they were great -- I don't know as we dined around in other sections of Venice and came back to the Carnival Palace at the end of the day. The closest we got was A Beccafico Arte at the very end of Cannaregio, about .7 miles away. But it was wonderful feeling the crowds melt away walking back each evening. That was gold!

History Traveler, thank you for the quick reply. You have definitely helped us with your positive input on the Carnival Palace. Having the vaporetto and restaurants nearby will help with our decision. I think I was looking at the map as such a great distance from everything, but nothing is very far in Venice. I agree that it will be relaxing to return to the gardens of our hotel each day; probably what drew my attention in the first place.

Grazie Mille!

I haven’t stayed at that hotel as we always stay in apartments, but last time we stayed in an apartment right next door.
Loved the area, it’s quiet and easy to walk to everything.

Will you be there when the Vogalonga boat race is on?
It goes right past the door of the hotel and is a spectacular sight….all rowing boats, no motors, hundreds of them!
I’m presuming it is on this year, it’s usually in May.

Just checked…it seems to be on Sunday May 28th this year.
It’s wonderful!

When you get to Venice, check to be sure there's either a staffed ticket booth or a ticket-vending machine at your nearest vaporetto stop unless you plan to use a pass. I found that some of the less-busy stops have no way to buy a ticket and it's best to know that in advance.

SJ, unfortunately, we will be there too early in the month to see the boat race. Sounds like something we would have liked. Nice to know you liked the area around the hotel!

Acraven, we will buy vaporetto passes outside the train station. Makes life a little easier 😎

Thx all,
Karen
