Which train station to pick up car rental in Rome?

We are 3 travelers taking the train from Naples to Rome in May 2023. Any suggestions regarding which train station we should stop at to pick up and return our car rental? Ideally one that’s easier to navigate out of Rome, if that’s even possible.
Our Tuscany base will be Orveito and unfortunately Hertz no longer rents in that area. Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

We always book with AutoEurope. They can answer your question of which train station to use. Give them a call. They are located in Portland, ME so eastern time.

Thank you for the tip to call this company as their web says no cars available for the week.

That seems unlikely
Perhaps too early?
Call their toll free number, they are very good and super helpful

We were just in Orvieto and Hertz was still there however AutoEurope no longer works with that location

Plenty of cars available in Rome for your week
https://www.autoeurope.com/
Specifically pick up at Tiburtina

If Hertz is in Orveito that may be a problem solver. I’ve read that Hertz no longer is there on multiple sites.
If you don’t mind me asking, did you drive there? enter code here

If you rent in Rome pick up the agency with the cheapest rate.

Using www.autoeurope.com
select your dates, then for pick up locations select ROME ALL LOCATIONS.
Then look at the deals, and get the cheapest whereever it is.

For drop off locations, the ROMA TIBURTINA station area is the easiest to reach near the city center. But there are many other locations for each car rental company, so you can choose whatever location you want.

I think Hertz is still in Orvieto, but I don't think www.autoeurope.com works with that hertz location anymore, therefore for that location you probably have to work directly with Hertz. That agency is closed on weekends, so that might have been the reason why you couldn't find availability, or maybe you selected a date too far ahead.

Update on what I have learned about Hertz in Orveito. Closes on Saturday at 1 and reopens Monday morning.
Hertz has to request a booking which will take a few days for a reply. So…no promises getting a rental and the cost was $1,039 for 6 days.
It seems the best route is to rent in Rome at one of the stations.

That sounds high even with the increased rates lately.

Where are you planning to drop the car? Where to next after Orvieto?

If you rent thru AutoEurope, you do have to pay upfront but can cancel so keep looking for a lower rate with them once you've booked.

I’d wait a bit longer, 3-4 months out.

Thank you for confirming my same thought on the price being high.
We would be bringing the car back to Orvieto and I suspect we can do much better renting in Rome.

The only car agency in Orvieto is Hertz, so as noted above you will have to deal directly with Hertz if that is your drop off choice

If you are not heading back to Rome for a drop off- consider Chiusi or Siena (if you are heading in those directions). Both easy, near train station

or Florence-- but if so be sure to get good directions to avoid ZTLs- there are several posts here with that advice.
Look for posts by Roberto

Lucca is another good drop off.

Don't forget to get your iDP- International Driving Permit- required- available at local AAA for about $15-20.

Nigel,

I apologize, my talk text picked up something about a code. Good reminder for me to always check my message before replying.

Since we are heading back to Rome after Tuscany, looks like picking up a car at the train station from the Sorrento makes the most sense.
