We stayed in Vernazza and loved it. We didn't book anywhere until we got off the train. The RS book had some numbers which we tried on arrival. A gentleman with limited english met us at the Farmacia and took us to an apt. down a back street. It was clean had a kitchen, bath and a loft. It was 70 euros/night. We stayed 3 nights. We saw the gentleman in the town during our stay and he helped us secure a reservation at a rest. which was almost fully booked on the water. We were there at the end of May/beginning of June.

La Mala', in Vernazza, sounds like an amazing place. It's pricey, but it does sound like it's worth the splurge, assuming it's affordable.

La Mala - just FYI - rates are way higher than posted in the Rick Steves book. I tried to book in April back in February and was so excited it was available - and they came back with a quote a lot higher than Rick stated. I asked them about this and they said his quote was out of date and that they were very sorry. They were very nice and recommended a few other places more in my "price range". FYI - my price range was between 200 and 300 dollars per night for a family of 4 - so that should give you an idea of how much it is.

We did go by the location when we were there and it really does look amazing if that is in your budget, I just didn't want you to be shocked by the price like I was.

We ended up staying at www.egirooms.com - great little place right on the main square. Egi was a wonderful host meeting us at the train station and getting us settled. Just to make sure you are aware, there are really very few "hotels" at all in Vernazza - there are mostly rooms rented out by the locals - but there are lots of them. Many of the rooms have private baths, etc - just do your homework if that is important to you.

If Egi Rooms is booked - he might give you some other suggestions. Once place that we really enjoyed eating was at Il Pirate Cafe - and I noticed that they had a posting for rooms for rent above their place. They are in Rick Steve's Italy book under "eating" in Vernazza - no website or email - but a phone number and they speak good English.

We were just there last week - it would have been very easy to just show up and rent a room for a great deal but I would not risk it in June from what I understand.

Good luck!

Just got back. We stayed at Giannifranzi in Vernaaza--rooms up (and up and up) several flights of stairs. Then three flights to the room itself. European Simple and clean, but not much on the way of style. But the views from up there! (Although not from the room itself, there is a little veranda and garden.) Not the cheapest in town, I am sure, around E110. There seemed to be loads of available rooms for less, but in June I'd probably try to have something lined up ahead of time, and that probably will cost a bit more.

Vernazza is terrific. Monterossa is a bigger town with more "beach," and also very wonderful. But the charms of CT are not to be found lying on a beach.
