Which station to depart from in Naples

Hi,
We are staying in Naples for a few days then getting the train to Sorrento. From our research, we are planning to get the Campania Express and can see that it departs from Porta Nolana and Napoli Centrale. I can see that Porta Nolana is the beginning of the line and is a small station, so am thinking it would be better to board here, as the station should be smaller, easier to navigate and less crowded for boarding and finding space for luggage. However, I wanted to check if anyone has done this and could confirm if this is the right decision - specifically, I wanted to make sure that the although the train stops in Centrale, there is no need for us to get off and board another train, and the train will go straight through to Sorrento.

Thanks
Vikki

Hi Vikki,

I have taken the CE several times from Napoli Centrale but have no experience taking from Porta Nolana so I cannot answer your question. However, if it helps I wanted to share my experience taking the CE from Napoli Centrale. It was crowded but it was rather easy and I would not go out of my way to avoid for the reasons you noted. Here’s why: at centrale you need only locate the ticket windows where CE tickets are sold as that is where everyone queues to await departure. To ease my nerves here I watched a YouTube video showing how to navigate the station. In front of the ticket window, there are dedicated workers who then guide the passengers through the turnstiles down to the platform and onboard the train. Crowded yes but we experienced no issues with finding somewhere for our luggage, it stayed with us. Perhaps if you have more than 2 pieces of medium size luggage or exceedingly large luggage you may have difficulty keeping it with you. There are no luggage storage spaces on this train and may have to store it at the middle of the car.

Alternatively, the ferry from Napoli to Sorrento I found to be easier than the train and less crowded, with more options for departure times than CE. The ferry queues of Napoli are very organized, compared to Sorrento. Downside here would be navigating to your hotel upon arrival in Sorrento. If your accommodations are closer to the train station you may prefer the train to minimize how far you have to walk with your luggage in tow.
