Which Rome Tour Company to use?

I have been doing some research on which tour company to use. I have seen lots of suggestions, but i would like to know which one to go with so i do not make a big mistake. I biggest concern is how are the tour guides? If you have used a company-is there a certain guide you recommend. Customer Service any good? Why should i choose this company? I know this sounds like an essay, sorry!

Angel tours always. Have done 3 tours with them and all were good. Their guides are all young, enthusiastic with english as their native language. Wouldn't hesitate to use them again. No preference for guide as all were terrific.

Definitely use Through Eternity. In November of 2008, we went on 3 tours with this group while in Rome; the Forum and Coliseum, the Twilight Tour and the Vatican City tour. Each tour was great; guides were wonderful and each made history come alive. We particularly liked the fact that they limit the number of people for a tour - this certainly makes it more personal. We would see some groups with 30+ people in them and we were glad we were part of a small group. I don't hesitate in recommending them. Each guide was very knowledgeable and it was evident they love sharing EVERYTHING they know. Enjoy your trip!

I have a different opinion, which makes the world go round. Why take a tour? Why be a part of the "sheep to slaughter" group? The tour operators tell you when, where, and with whom you are going with. Try this: Purchase a few guide books. I utilize Frommers, Steves, Lonely Planet and D&K. Each will give you a different perspective on the same sights that interest you. Take the city bus Hop On Hop Off tour #110. It covers over 80 sightseeing destinations with an audio guide. Sit on top in front for the best view. The ticket is good for 24 hours and the route takes 2.5 hours. After the overview, which is excellent, take the Metro to the destinations or sights that interest you. The Metro is very, very easy to use.

We were in Rome in the fall of 2007 and took two tours with When in Rome Tours. One was the Colosseum and Ancient Rome tour, which was decent and enjoyable but not outstanding, and the other was their Vatican tour, which was not very good. On the Vatican tour, the tour guide was not all that great and also they skip half of the Vatican Museum, exiting the museum just after seeing the Sistine Chapel. The part of the Vatican tour that was pretty good was St. Peters.

In fall 2007 we took Through Eternity for our tour of the Vatican and also for the Forum. They were awesome. If there are enough of you (we were 7) it is good to hire them for a private tour, and there is not much difference in cost per person - they go on your schedule and personalize things a lot more. Enjoy!
