Which neighborhoods in Rome should we consider staying in?

Ciao a tutti!

This is my third time using this forum, and I'm so glad to have this resource! You all are amazing, and so knowledgeable! I've been researching the neighborhoods of Rome a little, but it's challenging to narrow it down as they all seem quite nice. My husband and I will be staying in Rome five nights. We're flying out of Rome early on the last day, and on the first day we're traveling to Rome. So I assume it'll leave us, realistically, about 4.5 days in Rome. We'd like to stay in a safe neighborhood, that is close to all of the attractions but probably not right in the middle of everything. We'd like to get a less tourist feel when we're leaving, and walking back to our apartment. If that's possible. Perhaps, since we only have 4.5 days to explore, we should stay a little closer to everything tourist? Please tell me your thoughts! :)

Kind Regards,
Paige

Another vote for the Trastevere neighborhood. It is within walking distance of most attractions but when you get "home" you have such a strong sense of where you are. There is also a train station that will connect you directly to and from the airport without going to the main Termini.

I third Trastevere given what you are looking for. It is fairly touristed, but less so than the Spanish Steps area. Going further afield will give a more local feel, but then you are farther away by definition. Trastevere has the balance right, in my opinion.

We are also going and staying in Trastevere. It seems to have a more residential feel.

We enjoyed staying right adjacent to the Vatican, in rooms provided by a convent (and I'm not even Catholic!). http://www.santamariafornaci.com/

Its a nice little urban village with restaurants and churches. When you walk out your door in the morning, BAM, there's the dome of St. Peter's. And its right on the main bus line from the Vatican to Termini station that passes by a lot of tourist sites.

We've been happy in our two trips to Rome staying in the Campo de' Fiori area, once in a hotel and once in an apartment. Yes, it's touristy, but it's also near everything--Trastevere, Piazza Navona, the Tiber River. When we were there in February last year it was chill and wonderful.

We have stayed in Rome several times, but my favorite was our last place...a convent by Victor Emmanuel monument. It was San Lucia Fillipini and we booked it through monastery stays.com A perfect place, clean, quiet and even had a lift! We could easily walk everywhere, including to/from the train station. The place had an interior courtyard and we stayed by the windows there, in the morning the birds woke us up, no city noise. Good luck with your choice
