Of the Italian adapter plug options - C, F, & L, could you tell me which one(s) we'll need for traveling to Venice, Parma & Torino? We've been to Venice but haven't been to Parma or Torino, yet, so need to know which additional ones we might need to purchase.
same one you used in Venice will work in most of Italy ... Type L (has the center grounded prong) ...may want to take a type F (two prongs) along just in case...in my travels to Rome, Florence, Venice it was type L
I use the 2 round prong all over Europe - works fine

Frances is talking about the type C adapter.
Type L is the standard grounding plug for Italy. If you have a grounding American plug (two blades and a round pin) you should use an adapter to a type L plug.
For non-grounding applications under 2½ amps (about 600W) you can use a type C adapter, but not for American appliances with polarized plugs (one blade wider than the other).
The type F adapter is a German Schuko plug. Some places in Italy might have one, but it is not the standard.
If you don't mind rolling the dice, we had no problem just borrowing adapters from the front desk at our hotels...they always had a basket of them that other patrons had left behind.
Thanks for the specific details, Lee. I'm ordering a set of Type L. Commila, we've heard mixed success with relying on hotels for a basket of adapters, and we need to be able to plug in two different items each night.
Jean,
The Type C adaptor* will work fine for appliances which don't have a ground pin.....

If any of your devices have a grounding pin, then the Type L adaptor is the one to get.....
Of course you can also use Type L with ungrounded appliances. The Type L adaptors shown in the link are able to connect a grounded and ungrounded device at the same time.
Thanks, Ken. That's the one arriving by Amazon in a couple of days. : )
I used the basic 2 pin Euro adapter that is sold in the Rick Steves store everywhere in Italy (and through most of Europe) without any issues. But them I am charging a cell phone or tablet or charging a camera battery, so not much amperage and no ground pin needed.
Wanted to add that the 2 prong adapters that I have are available a lot of places. I see them in Target, WalMart, REI and small travel stores. I carry more than 1 just in case I forget to take the plug when I packing up to leave my hotel.
Just be careful with hair dryers. I used an adapter on my first trip to italy and my hair dryer literally caught fire.
No problem with hair dryers. I always just use the one in the hotel or let my hair dry naturally.
Thanks, everyone, for your responses!
