I am going to be in Europe this fall and will be able to travel on the weekends from Amsterdam to anywhere in Europe. Out of Venice, Rome, and Florence, which city do you think one needs the most time in? And, which cities would be the best to do as a pair?
I am confused. Are you asking if you can see two of these cities in a single weekend after leaving A'Dam?
If you have access to a discount airline, you could get a quick view of one of them per weekend trip.
Second question is easy: Rome and Florence make a good pair. They are about an hour and half away from each other on the Eurostar. Venice is too far from the other major sites in Italy to 'partner up'.
First question depends more on your sightseeing taste, but I would say Rome is the one you need the most time in. If you look at Rick's recommended time planning, he has schedule suggestions for 3 days in Venice and Florence each (not counting daytrips) and for up to 5 days in Rome. Rome has the largest number of "must-see" sights compared to the other two.
When making your plans, keep in mind that Amsterdam is still a few hours away by air from Italy, so you aren't going to have all that much time actually on the ground in the cities.
Venice is beautiful, especially at night, but it is a little Island, there isn't a TON to do like there is in the other two cities. You will be able to see Venice in a day or two, make sure you are there for a late dinner. I would spend more time in Rome and Florence as there are plenty of things to see and do.
No question - ROME!
And if you want to pair up two cities, do as suggested above, Rome & Florence are very close via Eurostar!
Good Luck! Ciao,
Ron
Rome of course, there is so much to see there.
I could do Venice in one weekend easily, it is small and it is not loaded with sites like Rome is..
Really Rome deserves at least 2 or 3 weekend visits, Florence maybe two, Venice one.
You could live your whole life in Rome and still not see everything. I'm totally with Ron on this one, 5 days isn't even enough to scratch the surface.......
Laura, Do you have enough time to spend a weekend in each city and then return if there is one you want to see more of?
Rome, Rome and Rome
As much as appreciate Linda's sentiment...Rome Rome and Rome I think Florence and Venice deserve a little time too. Clearly though I beleive Rome deserves the most time, Florence if you are really in to art can take awhile and Venice just to see a very unique place.
