which hiking route would you suggest, Monterosso to Vernazza or Vernazza to Monterosso?

which hiking route would you suggest, Monterosso to Vernazza or Vernazza to Monterosso? I read somewhere a recommendation on which village to begin your hike so that you encounter the most difficult part of the hike at the start when you are still fresh. The problem is I can't recall if they said start at Monterrosso or did they say to start at Vernazzo? Can someone that has experienced the hike please give me some guidance? Which village to start? thanks

You have to climb pretty quickly almost as soon as you leave either village. I like going from Monterosso to Vernazza because of the views of Vernazzo as you approach it.

We chose the Monterosso to Vernazza route (and then on to Corniglia) for that same, much-photographed look at Vernazza from above. Either way is a pretty good climb although it may be just slightly less strenuous doing it in reverse.

Jarrardd, in either direction, you will find some steep climbs- better hit the step master machine prior to your trip! Have a great adventure in a fantastic locale.

We go from Vernazza to Monterosso. You still get all the views as there are places to look out. There are a LOT of steps close to Monterosso and I prefer to go down them to Monterosso, instead of going up them to Vernazza. Just my preference.

It is seemingly endless steps up from Monterosso to Vernazza. It is certainly easier from Vernazza toward Monterosso where elevation gain is more gradual.

It depends if your right eye sees better than your left eye or viceversa. If you walk from Monterosso to Vernazza the views of the sea are on your right.

Regarding going up and down the path, when you go downhill it's a good idea to turn your shoes around so that your shoe heels are in front.

jarrardd,

I'd suggest starting in Monterosso and hiking south, when you're well rested. There's quite a steep climb at the Monterosso end, and I find it easier to go uphill rather than downhill on steep sections (much easier on my knees). I find the downhill section going into Vernazza quite easy.

Be sure to take lots of water, and if possible leave a bit for the stray cats at the Vernazza end.

We did the hike from Monterosso to Vernazza last week. If you start on the Monterosso end, you will have the toughest part of the climb early on. Once you get halfway, the rest of the way to Vernazza is pretty gradual and not nearly as tough as the first part. The views are spectacular, especially looking back at Monterosso, and then seeing Vernazza on your approach. Have a great hike.

thanks everyone for the input, We'll probably do Monterosso to Vernazza to take advantage of the "steepest part while the freshest" approach!!

Agreed! Did it yesterday and feeling it today.

I hike in Phoenix on light rocks and sand and have Merrell light hikers and Obeos heavier shoes. Brought the Merrells and really wished for heavier shoes. I felt every stone
