In researching car rentals for a pick up in Venice in a drop off in Milan,I have found many negative reviews. To pick up in Venice on a Sunday my choices are Hertz, which is significantly more expensive, Sixt, or Europcar. Hertz has the lowest availability.
Can anyone advise me on this? Thank you so much.
We have used all three brands in Italy and never have had any problems, reliable brands.
Why not take the train?
We've used Hertz, Avis and Europcar in Italy with no complaints.
We book our cars thru AutoEurope.com.
Use this site- they are having a flash sale thru tonight 15% off

Did you try AutoEurope? For the Sunday I checked (in June), AutoEurope shows cars from Avis and Budget as well as Hertz and EuropCar. This is with pickup at VCE (the airport). Avis is considerably cheaper than Hertz. Budget is the most expensive.
But to answer the question, we have only rented from Hertz in Italy, and never had a negative experience.
@ChristineH- thanks for info about flash sale as I wondered why we received a discount when I booked our rental a couple of days ago! Another forum member had checked on theirs and cost was lower so I decided to reserve ours. Ah ha!
We've always rented directly from Europcar with no problems. Do you have to pick up on a Sunday? That can make it harder.
The only time we rented at car was in Naples, using Auto Europe/Herzt. We paid for no-fault insurance. We had no problems, except getting lost, ending up in the shipyards instead of the airport. The reason we chose Auto Europe from/to Naples was we needed to return the car on a Sunday afternoon and catch a train early Monday morning. Not all car rental places are open on Sunday or they have limited hours, so check that carefully.
Thank you all so much for this help. I feel a lot better about it all.
