Which area to stay in Venice?

Should we stay close to San Marco, Rialto bridge or Dorsoduro? We plan to walk everywhere with the baby on carrier and have a budget of at most $200 per night. Less even better but want big rooms and some view.

Please recommend a nice place you have stayed at. I've checked Tripadvisor, but I am still now sure if I should stay at than #1 ranked hotel or B&B.

Some places I have checked out online:
Hotel Campiello
Hotel Belle Arti
Pensione Accademia

Thanks

San Marco area would be centrally located to major attractions and a short walking distance to others and is a major transportation hub.

I like Dorsodoro. Stayed at Bell Arti for a week, on Rick Steves tour. No view, but area was very nice.

I like Dorsoduro and in Castello the area closer to Campo Santa Maria Formosa.

Hotel Campiello is really close to an extremely busy area of Venice, at least in the day time. I would eliminate that one, but I'm not you.

If you are staying at least three nights, you might want to check apartment rentals. more room, kitchen with fridge.etc.

we have used they folks with good results:

www.veniceapartments.org

www.viewsonvenice.com is another.

there are lots of agencies.

Belle Arti and Pensione Accademia are well located close to the Accademia bridge. there are restaurants and enotecas close.

Pensione La Calcina, on the Zattere also gets good reviews.

Sonia - I always suggest - http://www.hotelcasanova.it/ Located directly behind Piazza San marco and easy walking to The Rialto area. I have stayed there over 20 times , including last week. My friends Stefano and dario man the front desk and will take good care of you.
Steve's suggestion is also good - less expensive BUT - I like the nightlife in The Square and don't always want to walk over there from Rialto.

Ciao, Greg

I have a follow up. Should I book a Single bed or double bed. Sometimes its listed as Single/Double room on the hotel sites for 2 adults and a baby?

I have set my eyes on Ca Dei Dogi. Ranked high on tripadvisor, but many people complain about small rooms. Is this generally the case with other hotels/B&B's? Small rooms?

I also like Locanda al Leon, Hotel Campiello, Al Piave and Pensione Guerrato.

Please guide which would serve us best. I know I can count on the responses here.

Thanks.

Sonia, in general in Italy, single or double refers to the number of people in the room not the size of the bed. A double will accomodate two people sometimes in a double bed or it could be two singles or two singles made up as one bed.

A single is usually only big enough for one person on a sinlge bed, although some spots will give you the single rate in a double bedded room if they don't have a single left and don't think they will sell it as a double.
