which airport to fly into Milan

Which airport should I be flying into Malpensa? I want to get easily over to the train station and then head up to Lake Como.

Upon arriving into Milan Malpensa airport you will need to pick up the airport shuttle that takes you to Milano Centrale train station there you can buy a ticket for the train to Lake Como area ie Varenna.
It is very clearly written in Ricks guidebk on Italy.

Lori, there are two airports in Milan ... Malpensa and Linate. Linate is closer to the city center than Malpensa. However, most international flights come into Malpensa. From either you can take a bus to Milan's Central Station which is where you connect to Lake Como.

International flights are generally Malpensa (airport code MXP). There are two shuttle bus services and a train. I used one of the bus shuttles that was very easy to find, Malpensa Shuttle, http://www.malpensashuttle.it/e-default.htm. It looks like you can buy tickets online also. It was about 6 euro one way. It drops you on the East side of Centrale Station, where you can hike up the steps to the ticket machines to buy train tickets to Lake Como (you can also buy these online).

The distance to the airport from downtown Milan is more like 40 miles. It's surprisingly far. But it doesn't take any longer to get there than it can to get to any of the NYC airports from Manhattan.

If you are fortunate enough to have a choice then choose Linate. I've never been there so I have no idea what it is like. But it is much closer to downtown and the train station than Malpensa.

Do your research ahead of time on those buses everyone else has talked about. The buses are very easy. There are several competing companies and good ole capitalistic competition has made those companies work harder to give customers a better experience than the others. After you research the companies then just pick the one that sounds best. They all work.

Milan Linate is closest to the central train station, with the bus taking about 30 minutes. The bus from Milan Malpensa can take 1.5 hours in heavy rush hour traffic. While Linate is quicker, buses to the central train station from both airports are easy. Fly into whichever airport offers flights with the best price and most convenient times.
