Which airport: Rome or Milan?

I have just started planning an October 2010, 15-day trip to Italy for my husband and I.

Would love to know what advantages/disadvantages there are to flying in/out of either airport. We'll be flying in from Seattle, WA, so we'll have connections either via Chicago, Newark, or JFK.

The airfare costs don't seem hugely different, but if anyone has any tips/advice/info/opinion about either airport, it would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.

I agree with Steve. It's a huge advantage to be able to start your trip in one city and leave from another. That way you don't have to backtrack.

Given the choice, I would fly into Rome. The train connection is easier. Also, Rome is more tourist oriented, which I think makes the first day better than Milan.

If you wish to start or end in either Rome or Milan, than the previous two posters are correct. If you are just looking at those because that's where flights from Seattle land, then why not let us know what your planned itinerary is and then we can offer more advice.

Rome is a more tourist oriented city and might be a good place to start. However, since it is October, you might want start in Miland and end in Rome as the days will be getting colder and Rome is usually warmer than Milan.

Thanks, everyone! I ended up doing a SEA-JFK-MXP and MXP-JFK-SEA route, because using my air miles did not allow for flying out of a different airport. I think it'll be okay and we won't have to do much backtracking with the way we re-did our itinerary. I'll do a separate post on the itinerary.

Grazie :)
