Where would you day trip to?

We will be taking a day trip from Siena by bus. We will have done Florence already. Where would you go?

  1. San Gimignano (75 min)
  2. Volterra (2hours)
  3. Montalcino (90 min)
  4. Pienza (90min)
  5. Montepulciano (75 min)

What is great about the town you would choose?

Thanks for helping us choose.

Volterra without question. It is a lovely little town and the Etruscan museum is absolutely fabulous. There is a good pizza place, I forget the name, that is in Rick's book and is fabulous.

What time of year? If in summer, the sunflowers around Montepulciano are incredible - as is the wine...

Thanks for the advice about Volterra..it sounds like a good choice.

I don't know if there will be flowers in Montepulciano in the fall, and I'm the only one that drinks in my family, so wine will not be a draw for them. But, if it is beautiful, that might be enough to take us there.

Any one else have other ideas?

I haven't been to Pienza or Volterra, but I have been to the others. Given your time constraints, I would lean towards San Gimi...it was our favorite of the three you mentioned..(we spent 2 nights there)...we were there in early October...loved the ambiance, and the towers (I had to go to the top of the tallest for the view)...the town is small enough that you can see it all in one day, but there is more than enough to keep you busy. Given the transit time, I would save the additional 1 1/2 hour travel time of San Gimi vs Volterra.

I've only been to San Gimignano on your list but really liked it. It's touristy but has a great medieval feel.

I was hoping for an overwhelming response to one of them. That way it would be clear where we should go. Sounds like many good choices...now what to do?

That's Italy for you. No matter where you go, you'll always be missing some amazing place. I say, flip a coin and pick one. Then live in the moment, enjoying where you are, with no regrets. How Italian is that? (^_^)
