Where to stay the night after cruise before flying out of FCO

We will arrive in Civitavecchia after a cruise and fly out of FCO the next morning. We plan on traveling by train but I am uncertain where to stay that night. It looks like from Civitavecchia to FCO we will have to travel to Rome and change trains anyway, so I thought we could stay by one of the train stations. Obviously Termini station has many hotels close by and looks like it would be a good option. I also considered trying to stay close to the Trastevere station since we will be in Rome 4 days before our cruise and staying near Termini station then. Would Trastevere be a good choice? Since we fly in the morning, I want to make sure we have adequate time to get to the airport.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Unless there is something you must see in Roma before you fly back, you might consider spending the night in Ostia, which is only 10 minutes from FCO. Ostia will be cheaper than Roma and you could also fit in a visit to Ostia Antica.

Would Trastevere be a good choice?

The First airport train from Trastevere departs to FCO at 5:21, if it is a good choice or not depends on how early you are supposed to be at the airport.

And on the number of suitcases you'll have to pull around Rome to get to Trastevere station, I have the impression that cruise passengers do not travel light.

We fly out at 10am, so we don't have to leave before the first train.

We will each have 1 suitcase. We have learned to travel lighter than we used to (ha ha) but not as light as we should!

I will look into Ostia. I appreciate the replies!

Since I stay at Hilton properties when traveling for work, I'm a Hilton Honors member. When flying out of FCO, we stay at the Hilton the night before.

What time do you finish deboarding your cruise? A possibility is to take a shuttle bus from, Civitavecchia to FCO. The Hilton has a free shuttle into Rome that runs almost every hour with a last return at 9:30 in the evening. That might be and option for you. We like the peace of mind of being at the airport and not having to rush to get there.

Thank you for that idea. it would be peace of mind to be right at the airport. I'm not exactly sure what time we get off the ship, but it will be in the morning. I'm sure the Hilton would store our luggage if we went straight there and then decided what to do for the day.

You could stay close to Rome Termini and catch the train out to FCO. It all depends on how early your flight is.

Or, you could catch a shuttle from Civitavecchia down to a hotel close to FCO. You'll be close by when it's time to be at the airport.

We stayed in Rome down the street from the Vatican, and we didn't want to deal with the luggage, etc. We got one of the cab companies to send a car for us, and it was maybe a 25 minute ride to FCO going against traffic. We found the fare to be reasonable.

I long ago figured out that those very, very early flights out of Rome tjust ake you to one of the other Gateway European airports. We now only fly out mid mornings when making plane reservations.

Since you need to be a the airport at 7AM, I think it will be less stressful to stay at the airport. Technically, you could sleep in Rome. There are cheaper, off-airport hotels you could use. But they generally charge a fee for their airport shuttle, and the one time we did it, I felt some worry about whether it would show up - because it looked like a subcontractor with a table-tent schedule on the hotel's registration desk.

I'm not talking purely about reality, but again, your stress level! The FCO Hilton was expensive, very convenient, and a pure, short walk to the airport concourse. But the Hilton was noisy, heavily booked, and the restaurant closed too early.

We did enjoy a RIck Steves Moment by dining-local near the off-airport place, but that was partly luck. And we'd had plenty of good Italian food during the vacation.

We spent the last night of our 2018 trip at a funky hotel in Fiumicino (cannot find the name, sorry), walked to the family restaurant next door for one of the best meals of our two week trip and had a 10 minute ride to the airport by private car the next morning. It was great.

We had a very early (7am) flight out of Rome a couple of weeks ago and we chose to stay in the city at Albergo del Senato next to the Pantheon. We debated staying at the airport but decided we wanted to enjoy our last evening more than we wanted an extra 30 minutes of sleep. Instead we paid for a private car arranged by the hotel for 60 euro. I would do it that way again!
