Where to stay-Sorrento, Positano or Cilento as a base

Planning a trip in April, 2010. Would love to explore Southern Italy. Recommendations of a village to stay in and commute by train to other places, i.e. Pompeii, Island of Capri etc. Positano, Sorrento or Cilento for a base and any recommendations for hotels, villas, etc.

Debra

Stayed in both Sorrento & Positano. For what you want to see I agree with other poster- Sorrento. Check out Il Nido Hotel it is up in the hills above Sorrento but they do have a shuttle down into town at different times during the day as well as pick up's - runs til 11 PM(at least in 2006 when we were there). They have a restaurant with a balcony. Food is very good (we ate there 2 out of the 3 evenings) THE VIEW TO DIE FOR- Overlooks the Bay of Naples - you see Mt. Vesuvius. So relaxing and with a great glass of wine PRICELESS.
Sorrento good for ferry's to Capri and Positano and Amalfi as well for day trips.

Enjoy your trip- we are heading back to Italy in May next year but not the south this time - Doing the CT instead.

Debra, we stayed in Sorrento, we took day trips to Pompéi, and Capri. We really loved Sorrento, easy to take day trip from there, nice restaurants, nice shopping, we stayed at Ulisse deluxe hostel, more like an hotel then hostel, good place to stay and cheap.

Sorrento is a good jumping off point for anywhere you want to go around the Amalfi peninsula. Everything is a short bus, train, or boat ride away.

I also recommend Sorrento. We stayed at Hotel Antiche Mura which is in the town center which we found to be very convenient. They have a website. You also can read reviews of the hotel on Tripadvisor.

I agree. Definately Sorrento. We made te mistake of making Capri our base. Big mistake! I also loved Poisitano, but SOrrent ois much bigger and a better base!

Yes, definitely Sorrento! It's easy to get there by train from Naples and Rome, and buses from Sorrento take you easily to Positano, Amalfi, etc.

Loved our 4 night stay in Sorrento in July 2006! Did easy daytrips to Pompeii, Capri, and Positano. Took the bus to Positano and the boat back. Sorrento was bustling with excitment as we were here when Italy won the World Cup!!

I recommend La Tonnarella hotel in Sorrento, it's in Rick's book. We've been there 3 times, like it a lot.

Base in Sorrento and take excursions to the neighboring communities and sites.
