Where to stay on Rome.

What neighborhood is the best to stay in for the most walkable sightseeing in Rome? Pantheon, Ancient Rome, Trastevere, or near Vatican? Any great suggestions for hotels with a roof terrace/bar?

We’ve always stayed near Pantheon. That’s almost dead center to all the sights and we’ve walked everywhere from there.

Vatican area is too far to walk everywhere. Ancient Rome Ok but less central.

Many really like Trastevere, we’ll be staying there for a change next trip in April but we don’t have plans to do much typical sightseeing this trip either

I agree with Christine that the Pantheon is in a very central location and is where you’ll follow the crowd. Campo de Fiori is also in a good location and a good hotel off this square is Hotel Smeraldo. Across the River Tiber near Campo di Fiori is my favorite neighborhood in Rome called Trastevere. In Trastevere the closer you stay to the River Tiber the more central you’ll be.

Yes, Pantheon/Piazza Navona is a good central location, and I recently stayed in a little boutique hotel there that had an amazing rooftop terrace. It's called Navona Queen Rooftop. 11 rooms, each with private bath, included ample breakfast (including an option of bacon and eggs if that's your thing). Easy walking distance to Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Castel Sant'Angelo. Lots of great restaurants in the area. I was surprised how much I liked staying there, as previously I've preferred Prati to be away from crowds and all-night noise. Didn't have any of that in this hotel, though it was Christmas time not high summer.

It is not 5-star, it's a family run place. Very nice owners who live across the hall, very clean and the terrace is the best. It's on the 5th floor with one of those tiny little retrofitted elevators or a magnificent marble staircase if you're up for it...

I've stayed in Trastevere twice, up near Termini once, and right near Campo de Fiori once. Pros and cons of each...

Trastevere — Pros: Really low-key, more "local" vibe, close to great restaurants, and a lot prettier. Cons: A further walk to all the major tourist areas, but no big deal if you get a Roma pass and hope on busses/trams or just enjoy sightseeing while getting your steps in ;)

Campo di Fiori — Pros: Campo is awesome, the market is cool, close to the Pantheon on my favorite piazza (Piazza Navona), and tons of great restaurants here as well. Still not terribly touristy.

Termini — Pros: Close to Termini station, so really easy to get to. It was also close to all the major banks (felt like the "financial district" of Rome) so finding a reputable ATM that doesn't rip you off was effortless. And it was much closer to the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps than the other two locations. But ultimately, this was my least favorite location. Felt a lot more "urban" compared to the other two.

Hope this helps!

On our last trip there we stayed at Campo di Fiori. We liked the location and all the major sites are within walking distance.

We stay at https://charmechic.com/. Awesome location steps away from the Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi, and great restaurants and shopping right outside. The rooms are of good size, and we loved that they provided Netflix for those nights you were tired and wanted a good movie, or to pass time if inclement weather.
