I understand that Stresa is where most people stay in Lake Maggiore, but I read somewhere that Cannobio is more quaint and similiar to Varenna (Lake Como). I loved staying in Varenna and would like a similiar experience in Lake Maggiorre. Has anyone been to Cannobio? Is it easy to get to via train & does it have a lot of boat connections to visit other parts of the lake? Thanks for your input & suggestions.
Sheron,
I stayed in Stresa last year, and quite enjoyed the visit. It's a beautiful town, but of course not as small as Varenna.
There's also lots to see there, including touring the Borromeo Islands, taking the Cable Car up to Mt. Mottarone or taking the scenic CentoValli Railway to Locarno (Switzerland) and then travel back by boat.
Cheers!
Trains do not serve Cannobio. The nearest stations are Verbania Fondotoce to the south or Locarno to the north. I believe there is a bus from Verbania, or you can take a boat from many places on the lake to reach Cannobio.
