Where to stay on Lake Como

My husband and I will be in Italy in September. We will drive from Milan to Lake Como and stay overnight. I'm having trouble figuring out the best area of Lake Como to stay. We will have a car, but I would love to be an area (overlooking the lake) where we will be able to walk to sights, restaurants and shops. Any suggestions?

Mfox,

We stayed in Varenna this past October & enjoyed our visit very much. The scenery is amazingly beautiful.
You can take the ferry & visit Bellagio & other lakeside villages.
We did not have a car so can't help you with parking ideas.

You can easily travel to Varenna from Milan via train and it only takes about 1 Hour & 3 minutes.

We stayed at Albergo Milano.

Enjoy your trip!

Thank you so much for your quick reply. Can I assume that Albergo Milano was lovely? I may book the same hotel. I truly appreciate your time.

mfox,

Varenna is a good choice, as is Albergo Milano. However, I'd suggest getting a reservation SOON (it may already be too late). There are lots of other hotels you could consider as well. If Milano is all booked up, have a look at Royal Hotel Victoria.

You won't need a car while there, as you'll be able to walk in the town or get to other nearby places like Bellagio by Ferry.

Yes, 'Albergo Milano' was a great choice for us & it included a delicious breakfast served on the hotel's terrace.

We actually stayed at one of the hotel's adjacent apartment, 'Casa Gialla', (Yellow House), a charming 2 bedroom apt.

We considered staying at, 'Villa Capressi' which is lovely, but we opted for the 2 bedroom apartment instead.

It was the best 3 nights of our trip because I had my own bedroom & didn't hear my mom's snoring ;-)
