Where to stay near the coast in Italy with 3 children in July?

I will be traveling with my husband and 3 children (ages 3, 5 and 7) for 3 weeks in July. We will be staying in Lucca for the last two weeks. We are trying to figure out where to stay for our first week...we will be flying into Pisa. We would like to stay near the coast, preferably one with a sandy beach. Does anyone have any lodging or town suggestions?

Lerici would be a good spot for your crew. It is on the Gulf of Poets south of La Spezia. It has sandy beaches, a nice easily walkable promenade bordering the beach. Not too far from Pisa Here is a link to get you interestred. http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2010/06/14/travel/20100620Lerici.html http://travel.nytimes.com/2010/06/20/travel/20next.html Not high on American tourist radar but very, very popular with Italians and others. So if it appeals, try to book lodging as soon as possible.

Ron, Thank you so much for your response. I just read the NY Times article and it sounds (and looks) like a great place for us to stay. Have you stayed there before? Do you have any lodging recommendations?

In Lucca, you're literally steps away from wonderful sandy beaches on the Mediterranean. Look at a map, and research the area between Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi, plus Fiumetto, and other places, all reachable by train or bus. Those beaches are very popular with Italians, so in July it might be difficult to find accommodation, but certainly worth a try.
