Where to stay near Rome when driving a rental car?

We will be travelling from Montepulciano and spending 3 nights in Rome. We will be driving a rental car, so we are looking for accommodations near or in Rome that we can drive to and park at without issues. We are trying to avoid driving in Rome as we have heard it can be a nightmare and would prefer to stay outside of the major traffic areas and take public transportation into the city. We are planning to do the typical tourist attractions during our stay. Any recommendations?

Will you be using your car while you're in Rome? If not, have you considered returning it outside Rome and then train in? Lots of people do that by dropping off their car in Orvieto. Why pay for a car you're not going to be using? Perhaps you've already thought of this. Good luck.

We are getting our car and dropping it off in Nice, France. We will be travelling around more of Italy, as well as France after Rome, so we will need our car after Rome.

Eurostars Roma Congress. East of the city almost to the beltway. Very nice hotel at a great price with free gated parking at the door. Not much around, but they have a shuttle to Termini with a return late afternoon as well as mid-evening. You might want to explore the cost differential of dropping the car as close to France as you can and going the rest of the way by public transportation. Or even taking the car back to Italy to dump it one morning.

Cassie, If you take your rental across country borders, there is a fairly large $$ hit. Anywhere between $300-500. Best to drop in one country and do another rental in the next. Best of luck,

Thank you for the info. We have already verified with our rental company that we can drive into Italy at no additional cost.
