Where to stay near Milan Malpensa for 1-2 nights- Lake Maggiore?

6 of us will be ending our 9 day trip flying out of Malpensa. 3 days in Vernazza, 3 days in Tuscany agriturismo, and the last 2 days are to be determined. Needing suggestions as we need to get from Pienza area back up to Malpensa area. 1 night in Volterra or some other Tuscan town with last night somewhere on Lake Maggiore OR 2 nights in Lake Maggiore? Have been to Lake Como and loved it but thinking Lake Maggiore is closer to airport. Thanks!

Where you stay the last night is highly dependent on what time your flight out of MXP is, dictating just how far is 'safe' to make the flight.

Yes, Lake Maggiore is quite near MXP. We stayed on the lower SE area of the lake in Ranco, a nice town with hotels and restaurants, which is much closer to MXP than Stressa, the main tourist center across the lake and north.. There is some ferry service too. Look at Il Sole di Ranco.

You need to stay on lake Maggiore at least two nights to have time to see at least something. The drive from Pienza, or even worse Volterra, takes forever. Stresa is my preference but it is 50 min drive to the airport. Arona is the closest lake town to the airport (30 min).

barb,

I'd also recommend staying in Stresa, as that will provide at least a short time to have a look at the area. I'd suggest at least two nights there.

Depending on what time your flight departs, you can take a train from Stresa to Gallarate, and then Taxi or Bus from there to the airport.

thanks to all for your feedback. Sounds like 2 nights somewhere on the southern end of Lake Maggiore is our best bet. I believe our flight home is around noon. We may have a car to return so as long as we can have time to return car and get to airport by 10.

Dear All,
We have a similar case
We are a family of 03-(02 adults and 01 fifteen year child).
On our way back from a holiday in Switzerland,we are planning a 02 night stay in Milan.
Our arrival into Milan should be late afternoon of the first day in Milan and our flight out of Malpensa is on the third day at 2100 hours.
Requesting some inputs on where to stay in Milan, in order to cover its main attractions.
Our budget for the triple room with breakfast is about 150 euro per night
Thanks and Regards,
Aditya

Aditya.
If you are interested in seeing Milan, you should stay near the Duomo/Castello Sforzesco Area.
To get to the airport you’d take the Malpensa Express train from the Cadorna station (near Castello Sforzesco) to the airport. The airport is far from the city but the train is fast and can get you there in 35 min. I wouldn’t take a taxi, which will take at least 50 minutes and set you back about 100€.
Train schedule below. Basically at least a train every half hour from Cadorna.
