On our next trip to Italy (June 2011) we want to spend a night or so in Volterra. Any suggestions about where to stay? I will be getting Rick Steves's Italy 2011, when it comes out but would love to hear from people who have stayed in Volterra.
Hotel La Locanda was wonderful. Beds comfy and the bathroom was large for an Italian hotel. Huge bathtub. There are stairs however. This was the hotel that was booked as a part of my RS Heart of Italy tour so I do not know the price of the room.
Since RS says Volterra is his favorite Tuscany hill town, you may want to contact Annie Adair at [email protected] for possible places to stay.
I stayed at Albergo Etruria a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. It's right in the heart of town, and is a fairly short, flat walk from the bus station (a plus if using public transportation).
Just be aware that you're likely to be dodging hordes of dewy-eyed teenage girls looking for sparkly vampires. :-)
