We will be staying in Vernazza in mid September. Anyone have any favorite hotels / rooms / pensions that you would recommend?
Craig,
I stayed in Riomaggiore, so don't have any information on the lodgings in Vernazza. You might check Rick's Italy Guidebook for some suggestions.
Are you firmly set on staying in Vernazza, or would one of the other villages suffice?
I know someone who just returned from CT and she said that next time she would stay in Vernazza, and recommended that I do the same. So that's my first choice.
Hi Craig... We stayed in Vernazza in May and loved it. The atmosphere is totally different at night when all the day trippers leave . We stayed at the top of the town at Toninno Basso's rooms. The were the cleanest, nicest rooms I have ever seen, and air-conditioned. He has only 4 rooms and they are usually filled , but you might try him. The top of the town is not uphill much- just come down from the train station and turn uphill instead of toward the harbour. There is a highly rated restaurant beside Tononno's caled Il Pirata. Don't miss the breakfast pastries or the dinners. Great food and the brothers are a hoot! Oh, by the way, In each of Tononno's rooms he has a computer for you to use to check email etc. You don't have to go to the internet cafe in town. Good luck.
Last May we stayed in Vernazza and took the trail, boat, and train to the other towns. Vernazza is the best, day or night. We had the most charming experience with Martina Callo and her family (see roommartina.it). One of the nights we wanted was booked; so she offered us a room with her friend, Caterina. Lovely! Both around $100/night. Caterina's website is sweet: caterinarooms.it After returning from 3 weeks driving through Italy from Bellagio to Paestum (and most points in between), we loved Cinque Terre the most.
I just returned from CT and stayed in Vernazza. After having visited all towns I HIGHLY recommend Vernazza. Contact Annamaria, she rents wonderful rooms and the most comfortable bed I have slept on in 5 weeks in Italy. [email protected] Her English is great and her rates can't be beat.
Staying in Vernazza if a perfect location but we followed the recommendations FROM Rick and stayed at Albergo Barbara. It was aweful!!! the location is great and we had been promised a partial ocean view. This we discovered was impossible as their rooms face the water or they don't. We were given an inside room that had one small window that faced the laundry lines in between the buildings. We asked for a second fan as it was dreadfully hot. They suggested we just KEEP THE DOOR OPENED INTO THE HAll.
We're going next month (9/21-10/2)to Rome, Florence and CT, with a side trip to Siena. Two problems...we've tried every recommended site that has appeared both here and in Rick's guidebook, and everything is booked. Guess that's the blessing/curse of being listed there and the whole world knowing about them. Any recommendations that are NOT in the guidebook or TV series?
Also having trouble getting night train to Paris on 9/29 with sleeping compartment for three (T-3). There are doubles wherein I can put my wife and her mother, but that puts me in with a stranger in another double. We have a 1st Class rail pass. Anyone made the trip from Florence to Paris on the night train?
I stayed at a lovely pensione at the top of the hill behind the train station last March. My friend and I arrived around 7pm at without a reservation and found this very clean pensione. Francesca was helpful and the breakfast was great. Reasonable prices and a nice babbling brook right below our window.
