My fiance and I will be taking the train to Venice from Rome on June 4th. We should arrive early/mid afternoon. From there we plan to explore Venice, stay the night and then board for our cruise which leaves at 5pm on June 5th. Yes I know we are totally cramming but I'm taking full advantage of our time in Italy. So where would you suggest we stay (near train station, Saint Mark's, Rialto, etc) to get the most out of our short visit and not spend a ton of time traveling from site to site?
Steve, already tried that place, they are either booked or require a 2 night stay minimum.
Perhaps your cruise line has some recommendations? I bet you're not the only one who wants to arrive in Venice a day early.
Try the Locanda Orseolo. A very lovely family-run hotel just off of St. Mark's Square.

This is a beautiful place to stay and they have a great breakfast.
My wife & I stayed at the Violino D Oro, (www.violinodoro.com) which is a very short walk from St Marks, close to a vaporetto stop, and nice breakfast. The people were very friendly. The price was reasonable, but that was 8/2008.
Laura - For many years this Italian has stayed at - http://www.hotelcasanova.it/ Located directly behind Piazza San Marco my friends Dario, Franco, and Stefano man the front desk - Nice FREE Breakfast!!
Ciao, Greg
Two years ago we stayed at the Hotel Abbazia in Cannereggio not too far from the train station. It is on a quiet calle (alley) and was a former Camelite monastery. We found it on venere.com and we were very satisfied.
Keep in mind that everything is more expensive in Venice, however, Venice at night is fantastic. It is fantastic because most of the tourists have departed.
Buon viaggio,
