Where to stay in Venice for one night

We are flying out of Venice and staying for 1 night. Right now we are booked to stay near the airport, as sad as that may seem. Is it worth staying on the island and then navigating the airport for early departure the next morning?

Leaving Venice does often present problems. We had problems with a pre booked boat picking us up as there was an extremely low tide the morning we were leaving.

I believe it is always worth staying IN Venice, even if just for an afternoon and evening.

If you stay at a hotel adjacent to Piazzale Roma, there is no problem getting to the airport early. The choices are bus (ATVO or another service I cannot recall), land taxi, or water taxi. We prefer the land taxi, which your hotel will call for you. The hotels we or our travel companions have used for this include the AC (a Marriott hotel), Arlecchino, and Hotel Olimpia. All different, all OK by our standards, and very different in price.

On our most recent visit, September 2023. Our son and his family had a 6 am flight from Marco Polo, and had no trouble making that with a taxi booked the night before from their hotel (Arlecchino). They had to awake at 3 am to do that; hopefully your flight is at a more civilized hour.

We have previously spent as long as a month in Venice and know the city pretty well. We were pleasantly surprised by the walking options from this location to the Zattere (a nice walking route on the Giudecca canal) , and various campos in Dorsoduro, and how “un-touristy” the area was. For a short (1 or 2-night) stay in Venice,.with a flight out from there, this would be my choice.

If you have already been to Venice, how about a memorable 24 hr suggestion? From Marco Polo airport, take a 1 hour bus to the charming town of Chioggia. Stay in the Hotel Duomo for half the price of Venice, and spend the day/evening strolling in a dreamy fishing village. Take the bus back to the airport the next day. We loved it there!
