Where to stay in Veneto region

We will be visiting the Veneto area in a few weeks and trying to decide where to stay. We will have a car – so want to stay outside any city center. Thinking the general Padua area may be a good base for day trips to Cittadella; Bassano del Grappa; Marὸstica; Asolo; Vicenza. Any suggestions on good place to zero in on? Hoping to find a nice inn, Agriturismo or possibly apartment.

Thanks for any help!

My favorite Agriturismo is Le Volpi, a few kilometers from Baone and close to Padova. Run by a lovely young couple, they have wine tastings and produce wines and olive oil. A pool and beautiful view of the vineyard and valley. Visit Arqua Petrarca from there as well.

We are going late October and selected Padua - after much research - in the city center as we will not have a car. Our day trips will include Vicenza and Treviso. Thanks for your list of day trips; will check them out.

For daytrips, I loved Bassano del Grappa, Asolo not so much. Arqua Petrarca, Montagnana, Este...

We stayed right outside of Vicenza, in the hills, which is beautiful. I concur with Zoe, love Bassano del Grappa and have visited there twice. Asolo was OK, small.

We have stayed @ Locanda Montegrappa in Borso del Grappa for Veneto cycling adventures. Lodging is a short distance from the restaurant, which I recommend. The lodging may not be what you would choose. By the way pick me up Miel Grappa while in Bassano del Grappa, those were the days when we would bring back liquids in carry ons. Take a look North (both east and west) of Bassano del Grappa. It is the foothills of the Alps. Vineyards on the hills. There are lots of quaint small towns with lodging, some are upscale. Giro Italia site will have bike routes i.e. great driving routes. Padova is in the plains and a bit large for me. Memories...the area above S46 to Val Sugana is "oh, so lovely."

For a more high end place in the northern aspect of the Veneto look to Hotel Abbazia in Follina. 4 star hotel in a small town with a GREAT restaurant. Wonderfull folks that run the place and can point you in many directions for wonderful experiences. Ask about the road with a circular tunnel....
Stayed here a few years ago and it was WONDERFUL
here is the link to the hotel. :http://www.hotelabbazia.com

Enjoying the view, I have wanted to visit several of the towns you mention in your OP, but have not gotten there yet. I hope you'll post a Trip Report on your time in Veneto. You can educate us all! Thanks.
