Where to stay in Val d'Orcia/Tuscany

I'm looking for thoughts/suggestions as to where to stay - in a town or in a agritourismo or other B&B out of town. We'll be travling with a car so either will work. I've thought about both Montalcino and Montepulciano, but am open to other suggestions. Any positives/negatives of either?

Hi Marcus,

If you want a basic, reasonably priced, clean, modern hotel with convenient parking and a good breakfast check out I Due Cigni. It's family-run and located in S. Albino about 4 km. from Montepulciano. We spent 3 nights there this past September and it made a great base for exploring Tuscany. We spent the days driving around the region and had dinner in Montepulciano each evening. You can also check their reviews on Trip Advisor.

I think that staying somewhere near Montepulcaino is more central to the places you'll want to visit.

Agriturismo La Bruciata is where we stayed for 5 nights in Tuscany. Laura and her mom are awesome. It is very reasonable, the food is out of this world. I brought back some of her olive oil and want to get more from her via mail. The rooms all have a view of the Tuscan hills and you are not far from everything in Tuscany. It is located just outside of Montepulciano. There is a resturant not far from the Agriturism that has wonderful food too.

I've stayed in both Montepulciano and Montalcino. Both are great and each has its own great wines. Montalcino is flater, has a few more restaurant options and some nightlife, but it seemed the more touristy of the 2 towns. I thought the quality of the food was better in Montepulciano. Stayed at Meuble il Riccio in Montepulciano, which I would highly recommend if you want to stay in town. They offer parking near the hotel and serve a great breakfast (worth the extra cost). Stayed at Hotel Giglio in Montalcino last May, which I liked but it's no longer in Rick's guidebook. They also offer free parking. My preference is to stay in a town, but others prefer agriturismos. I'll let them comment on those.
