There are lots of options for home basing. A good guidebook will give the information needed. Siena is ideal as a base, as is Cortona, Montalcino, Montepulciano, San Gimignano and Volterra. As long as you have a car most of these towns will be easy enough to get to. Otherwise, Siena will be better as it has regular buses and trains.

We are heading for Pienza next week.....We love it and have stayed... first time, 1 week, 2nd time, two weeks, 3rd time 2 weeks, this time 3 weeks. Brunello country is 15 minutes away.....In Montellcino and Montepulciano and you can participate in the BEST of Italy's wine tasting experiences in these towns. Rick's Italy describes these towns and many others in Tuscany You can get to anywhere in Tuscany from Pienza but plan on renting a car. You will not have much time in 4 days to see it all, but it is beautiful. Pienza is very small. very picturesque, and full of tourists only during the day. Buses come and go. We find it quiet and restful . Our favorite B&B is Il Giardino Secreto. Look it up ....it is in a beautiful setting in a quiet garden. ...Don't forget to eat next door at La Buca di Enea , a small 9 table mom and pop restaurant with wonderful Tuscan food.
