We're hoping to stay a few nights in Testavere. However, I take it that some areas are loud at night or more touristy, while others less so.
Where within this area would you recommend?

Haven't stayed there myself, but Hotel Santa Maria receives a lot of good comments. I've walked past it many times, and it's on a quiet street in the heart of Trastevere just a short walk from the more touristed streets. Hopefully someone who has stayed there will comment on their experience.

We stayed at Hotel Trastevere which is a very basic hotel with reasonable prices. It's a block or so from Piazza San Calisto which is where the locals seem to hang out in the evening and close to a lot of restaurants. It was quiet at night and about a 20 minute walk to the Colosseum and Vatican. They offer a free breakfast and have very friendly staff.
