Where to stay in Sorrento, Italy

Help- I've spent hours looking at web site for a place to stay in Sorrento. I am traveling with my cousin and this is what we are looking for; 3 nights @ Reasonable rate $100-$160 a night, w/ a balcony overlooking the sea/ walking distance to Circumvesuvina train, walking distance to town or in town, walking distance to/from bus and restaurants. Pool is not necessary as we are arriving on May 2nd- still a little cold. Balcony would be nice in room- or outside area for breakfast would be great. Thanks, Mary Also we need a recommendations for a place also in Positano for two nights. Also w/ balcony , walking distance from bus and town. Same price range
$100 to $160 a nights.

We've stayed at hotel La Tonnarella 3 times and love it. It has everything on your list, plus more, just not sure of the exact price so you may want to check them out. I would email them rather than just relying on their website price. Hotel Sorrento City is nice and less expensive than La Tonnarella. They have balconies but no sea view. Check RS Italy and TripAdvisor.com

We stayed at Anticha Mura last week. Great staff, great breakfast, great rooms. Surpassed all expectations by far. No sea view though. Will definitely stay there again. They did offer 15% discount for Rick Steve's. You will
need to spend more in May.

A second vote for the Antiche Mura, where we stayed 3 years ago and to which we are returning in early April. Wonderful in town location easily walkable to the train/bus station, best breakfast we've had in Italy over several trips (with both indoor and outdoor seating which even in April when we visited was delightful), comfortable room with gorgeous tiling and huge bathroom (we stayed in the annex by the pool), and helpful staff. The only thing missing was the seaview- but these other factors more than compensated.

We stayed 3 nights at Palazzo Januzzi in Sorrento last May, right on Piazza Tasso (the main square). We had a room with a large terrace overlooking the square. It doesn't have an ocean view (you can see it a bit in the distance), but watching the local traffic and pedestrians mix at the center roundabout was really entertaining. They had a nice outside breakfast area but it was too cool when we were there to eat outside. Easy walk from the train station. Lots of restaurants and shops nearby. We just walked down the hill to catch the boat over to Capri.

Mary, I hope to see you at one of our Sacto Area Helpline meetings! We're having one this Sat the 19th...see the thread under General Europe! My husband and I really liked Hotel Il Nido. Peruse their website, and look over the glowing reviews at Trip Advisor - don't forget the photos, too! BUT...note the location. They offer an hourly shuttle service into town (and to/from the train station) that worked beautifully. We ate every breakfast, and nearly every dinner (great food!), on their balcony so we could watch the twinkling lights of the cities below and just make out the outline of Mt Vesuvius in the evening light. The rooms and facilities were spotless, roomy, and we appreciated the use of their laundry room! Because the hotel is away from the city center, it was very quiet at night. Ask for a room with a view...

Mary,
Our first visit to Sorrento is in April. I also spent hours looking for a place to stay. Because of the reviews, I booked Antica Mura. But then my husband said he had to have a view of the Med, so I cancelled Antica Mura and booked Hotel Minerva. Haven't been there, but trip advisor comments are good and it's in Rick Steve's book and has balcony and view. For April our rate is 135 Euros, and I would think May would be about the same. Sounds like it's walkable from town.

Mary, I'm not sure that an ocean view is available at a reasonable price in town. You may need to go "up the hill" a bit. We stayed at the Hotel Vue D'Or. They have a free hourly shuttle, a nice restaurant with reasonable prices, a pool, balconies with views... We loved it. Price was about E100 per night in July. However, they do nickel and dime you - you must rent pool towels, pay for WiFi or to use their computers, etc. (That might be common in Sorrento, I don't know.) And the views! As a previous poster mentioned, the night views "up the hill" are as spectacular as the daytime views of the ocean. Dave

Hotel Settimo Cielo - has been almost 4 years since we stayed we there and I am still obsessed!!! Is it even open anymore??? - maybe you should find out first haha. But it's reasonable, has awesome balcony with amazing view of the bay, and free breakfast. As the others mentioned, you will need to walk up the hill a bit, but it's a breathtaking walk and to me, that didn't impact the trip negatively at all.

I second the Hotel Settimo Cielo. You can do no better for a view; although the rooms are not fancy. We are visiting in mid May and got 110 euro per night by mentioning RS.

another vote for Mignon Mueble. Stayed in May 2012. NO water view, but everything else on your list. Huge room with cute wrap around balcony. Super clean, nice breakfast, delightful sunny vine covered patio for sipping (or gulping) vino. Highly recommended, great value.

Dear Mary,
My hubby and I went to Sorrento last May-early June. We too stayed in Antiche Mura. We had hoped for a beautiful sea view but could not find that along with other priorities...so we took the best advice and tried Antiche Mura and loved it. The breakfasts are incredible...and a lovely patio to enjoy them on. We took one day off our break-neck pace and lounged by their lovely pool...such a relaxing day. I will say now that I really regret that we did not take the boat trip to Capri....just ran out of time. Antiche Mura has a great location....easy to walk anywhere you want to go and that was a pleasure. We took the bus ride to Amalfi and boated back and that was a nice day trip. Sorrento can be crowded and loud....but Antiche Mura is a respite from the busy streets. Have a great trip!
