Where to stay in Sorrento?

I have been reading reviews on TripAdvisor as well as the suggestions in Rick's book; Sorrento sounds like a nightmare! My husband and I plan to stay there for three nights in early October. We won't have a car, so we're looking for a place not too far from the train station and center of town. We were hoping to find a room for under 120 euros per night...but it seems people have had so many NEGATIVE experiences! For example, it sounds like the studios at Villa Elisa on the ground floor don't have windows! Il Roseto is a dangerous 20-minute walk. The rooms in Hotel Sorrento City are tiny. Casa Astarita sounds famous for its switcheroo act and the Hotel Mignon Meuble has thin walls! Does anyone have any other ideas?

Lodging in Sorrento is pricey. We stayed at Maison Tofani in May. They have one room (maybe called a family room?) which is quite a bit less expensive than the others. Sorry, but I don't remember what we paid. The price includes a wonderful breakfast, and the people are just as nice and accommodating as anyone could be. It's located a block off Piazza Tasso. We had tried to get into a b&b, Villa Adriana; but they couldn't give us all the days we wanted. It also looked great; and, I think might be in your price range. I also found that most of the lodgings either had significantly negative reviews or were not close to the center. I did not want to rely on a hotel shuttle every time I wanted to go somewhere. In retrospect, that was a correct decision. We were able to walk everywhere.

We stayed at Hotel Casa Dominova for three nights in March 2011. You can check them out at booking.com. Not fancy but clean. It was about a ten minute walk from the train station. The owners also own a restaurant where we ate all three nights. Delicious!

We loved our stay at Hotel Antiche Mura in Novenber and can't think of a single negative thing about this beautiful hotel. Our balcony room overlooked the Valley of the Mills (?). If you need a sea view, then this would be a negative factor, but the location can't be beat - just up the street from Piazza Tasso and the rest of Sorrento. We walked from and to the train station as well as the bus station. Also, the most incredible breakfast buffet of any hotel we have ever stayed at in Italy. I checked their website and they offer an October special of 99 euros a night. I think their high-season prices are pretty high, but off-season rates are very good.

Thanks for that advice...yes the Antiche Mura would be the ideal place to stay, but their special doesn't start till October 13 and we'll be there October 5! The rates I was quoted were outrageously high! I will check the other ones out! Thanks!

We stayed at Hotel Eden. Very clean, nothing fancy but good location. We loved Sorrento. Best lemoncello and really good gelato. Enjoy!

We stayed at Ulisse Delux Hostel in October 2010. It was a nice hotel with large rooms and a great breakfast. We did not see the hostel section of the hotel and other than the name, did not know it was a hostel. It was a few blocks from the train station but the walk was not a problem. We were in our mid 60s to late 70s and had no issues with getting our luggage to the hotel. It was a wonderful, inexpensive place to stay.

We LOVED Il Nido! Check out their TA reviews...Their shuttle service worked wonderfully, the meals were fantastic, and I don't recall hearing anything from anybody for the week we were there. Quiet (ahhh). The Ulisse was a close runner-up...two different places. We're glad we went with Il Nido!

Lynette, I don't find Sorrento to be a "nightmare" at all. I stayed at Hotel Desiree on my last visit, and would certainly recommend it. It's somewhat "basic" but very comfortable and the owners are wonderful! There's a great rooftop terrace, where one can sit in the afternoon sun with a glass of Vino, and enjoy a fantastic ocean view. The breakfasts were also a bit "basic" but quite adequate. However, Desiree is a bit of a hike from the train station. When first arriving with luggage, taking a Taxi would be highly advisable. When touring around, the walk into town is quite pleasant and not difficult at all (IMHO). However, if you have mobility issues, that may change the situation. Hotel Desiree is right next door to La Tonnarella, which is a bit more "upscale". They also have a restaurant, and the view over the bay while dining at night is incredible! The two Hotels share a beach. You might also have a look at Il Nido. I haven't stayed there but it's reasonably well rated. While it's a bit out of town, as I recall they provide a free shuttle. Good luck and happy travels!

We were delighted with El Nido ("the nest") high above the town... the owner himself was everywhere, and became kind of a friend -- wine suggestions, helping with various questions. We used their shuttle, but one of the best moments was simply sharing a bottle on the deck overlooking the town and the sea with other guests...

We stayed for 3 nights at Palazzo Januzzi, right on Piazza Tazzo in Sorrento in May and loved our room. It was an easy 10-15 minute walk from the train station. We didn't have a car and never took a taxi while we were there. Lots of shops and restaurants nearby. However, I'm not sure if it will be within your budget of 120 euros or not. We splurged a little in Sorrento over our budget in other cities to get a room with a terrace overlooking the piazza and would do it again. Great free entertainment watching the cars, bikes, and pedestrians go around the very small roundabout in the square.

I found the B & B Dolce Vita on TripAdvisor, a ten-minute walk from the train station. I may go with that one, because it has absolutely NO negative reviews. Everyone raves about how helpful the owner is...Thanks for everyone's help!

We are staying at Hotel Elios out on the Via Capo (recommended by Rick) at a rate of 85 Euro per day (for a double) in early October. The host, Gianna has been extremely affable thus far, and actually offered a more basic room at a rate of 75 Euro per night, but, naturally, we took a room with a sea view at the higher rate.

HI Lynette Stayed at HOtel Sorrento City for a week three years ago and was very very happy. Location -easy walk to train, grocery store underneath, pleasant stroll to shops and restaurants. Really receomend it -great home base for all of Amalfi Coast and Naples. Great staff and very good breakfast. Rooms on the street are noisy but do have nice little balconies to sit out and become part of the show Enjoy Mike

I stayed at the Mignon Mueble in May. Well located in central Sorrento, walkable to the train station. Spotlessly clean, ample breakfast, large bright rooms, friendly, English speaking staff. This is a RS recommended hotel, and we loved it. I just checked rates, and it's showing 80E per night for a double in October. I loved this hotel and have recommended it to several friends travelling to Sorrento this fall. I never heard a peep from neighbouring rooms, or from the halls.

Was thinking of a trip the week between christmas and New Years- I guess a room with a sea view is $$$ but are there other places that will have views that are not right on the cliffs edge? Other places I was thinking of were Hotel Palazzo Guardati, Sorrento City Hotel, Hotel Antiche Mura.....seems the 3 day min there for NYE was 750euro....is that a good price or are there other places that do not require minimuns at this time

Hello Lynette, I would also like to recommend Il Nido. My wife and I were there in September 2010. The owner made us feel like family. The shuttle is very convenient and the views from the hotel are awesome. If you go to the website, you can see their webcam which will give you an idea of the view. Breakfast was included in the room rate and we ate dinner there as well and had an excellent meal. You will not go wrong if you stay here. Good luck and enjoy. Italy is a wonderful place. Kind regards, Eric

Sorrento is hands down my favorite place in the entire world. Period. Something about the coast and the lemons and the everything makes me feel like a little kid looking into an aquarium - very few places have that effect on me. Having said that, I would sleep under a cardboard box if I could just to be in Sorrento, so the so-called "nightmare experiences" that people have had wouldn't really phase me personally. Of course everyone is differrent, but it's so worth it in the end - TRUST me!
I stayed at Hotel Settimo Cielo. You may be able to find something for less than 120 euro. It's not in the perfect location as there is a nice walk to the city center, but the hotel, the view and the staff make it an awesome experience. Please don't let reviews scare you from Sorrento!

Revised Sorrento post Hi Lynette, We stayed at Il Nido in May. It is a wonderful hotel. If you ask for a sea view room with a balcony, you will have a superb view of Mt. Vesuvius, hear bells ring at a nearby church, see fantastic sunsets, and see lemon and orange groves, as well as Sorrento. It is up on a hill with a free shuttle. When we mentioned Rick, they gave us a discount. The dining room was beautiful, with a great menu. The free breakfast is superb, with many choices. I especially liked the orange juice machine. There is also a washer and dryer on site. Very good experience! I just wanted to add, however, that Sorrento, although nice, appeared to be VERY touristy and not one of my favorite places that I visited in Italy. It didn't hold the same charm for us as did, say Venice and Florence. There didn't seem to be much to do in Sorrento. But many people love Sorrento. We didn't walk all over the city, so probably we missed some great things to see. It is a great base for Pompeii, Capri, Anacapri, and the Almalfi Coast. Ruth
