My husband and I are traveling from Rome to Siena. We want to make Siena our home base and take day trip to Florence and Pisa. Any suggestions on where to stay that is clean, romantic and affordable?
Hotel Alma Domus. Found this on Rick Steve's web site. Stayed there Oct 09, it was the cheapest place we stayed in our two week trip to Italy, 65 euro a night. Very simple, bed, bathroom and balcony large enough to place two chairs onto it and watch the sunset. One of the most spectacular views was opening our doors to the balcony to see the roof tops of old siena that first evening, just beautiful. What was humerous was when we walked into our room, we found two twin beds, (remember it's run by nuns:)) Our friends and ourselves would totally recommend this place if your ok with simple.
We took breakfast only once to experience the nuns in their habits, otherwise we ate our meals out.
And I loved http://www.hotelborgognini.it/
I have stayed here twice and I love it.
Thanks for your suggestions.
www.anticaresidenzacicogna.it My wife and I stayed 2 nights recently. Great B&B. Highly recommended in LP and other guides. 10 minute walk to bus and Campo. Quiet street. All rooms spacious except "Corte".
Florence is OK for day trip from Siena on fast bus but Pisa is too far and, to me, not worth the long travel time Pisa is OK day trip from Florence.
Patricia,
I'd also recommend Albergo Bernini. The rooms are very comfortable (even though the house is about 800 years old!) and the family is wonderful. Sitting on the breakfast patio with one of their large mugs of coffee in the morning is a favourite memory of Siena.
It's within walking distance to the Piazza where the Buses stop, which is the easiest way to get to Florence.
I will add my .2 cents worth on Albergo Bernini! In addition to what has already been written, you absolutely have to eat at Osteria Il Compaccio which is located almost directly "underneath" the hotel! It is a magical place one you won't soon forget! My wife and I still remember everything we had that rainy night in Siena!
