Where to stay in Rome in April

We re debating between Hotel Portoghesi, Hotel Smeraldo and Campo de fiori. Also open to other suggestions

I’d recommend the Monti neighborhood. Although I don’t know your age or what appeals to you. For me, Monti has a young vibe without the loud party noise of Fiori. I also think Monti is quaint and affordable central home base with lots of character and spectacular restaurants nearby. Good luck!!

Thanks for your advice. We re in our early 60’s, love to walk, first trip to Rome and have travelled more domestically than internationally. Can you recommend a hotel in the Monti neighborhood?

We've stayed twice at Campo de' Fiori, once in a hotel in October 2010, then last March in an apartment overlooking the market.

The first trip was only for two nights, Campo was a busy place, and there was just not enough time. But for a week in March--and probably you'll see this in April too--you will experience a fairly active area but not really crowded during the day, and when the market closes down in the late afternoon, it's wonderfully quiet except for the occasional street musician, whose beautiful music reverberates off the buildings on the piazza. A memory I won't soon forget.

There are tons of great, reasonable restaurants--not the ones on the perimeter of the square, however, those are tourist traps--but just short walks down any of the auxiliary streets off the piazza. Bakeries and markets are close by, and it's only two short blocks to the main drag, Vittorio Emanuele, to catch the bus anywhere in Rome.

Enjoy your planning!

What exactly is the focus of your debate? I do hope by "Campo de fiori" you mean the hotel and don't plan to pitch a tent in the campo.

Camping de Fiori. That would be an interesting sight.😀

I spent two nights at Hotel Smeraldo and it suited me very well. My room, a single, was small but I had a terrace with views over the roofs of Rome. Handy for Campo di Fiori, Largo de Argentina, the Pantheon, etc. All within walking distance. Two decent restaurants close by and a great deli/bakery close by. If I an Rome again, I would stay there.

We decided on Hotel Portoghesi so you won’t see us toasting marshmallows over a campfire near the Spanish Steps

We stayed at the Hotel Raffaelo. It was an easy 4-5 block walk from the train station in a quiet location. The staff was very helpful with dining recommendations, all an easy 2-3 blocks from the hotel. There is a subway stop nearby that can connect you with all sights. We did not use it, as we walked to everything. We would stay there again.
