Where to stay in Rome - hopefully near Spanish Steps?

My husband's and my first trip to Italy, have 3 nights in Rome before joining friends in Umbria for a week. We'd like a nice CLEAN hotel and like to keep it under $300. per night. My thinking is that staying near the Spanish Steps is the most central. Is that right? Any recommendations for a hotel? Grazie!

I wouldn't say that the Spanish Steps area is the most central, but it depends what you want to see. I'd consider the Pantheon, Pza. Navona or Campo dei Fiori to be the most central location in Rome.

You didn't say what time of year you're traveling, but I bet you could get quite the nice room for $300/nt in that area. I like the Hotel Santa Chiara myself....

I second Jason's recommendations of neighborhoods. The Steps are actually kind of on the edge of the major sights. Have you acquainted yourself with a map of Rome yet? Get the RS book for Rome if not.

Thank you for the responses! There have been some questions about the dates we are traveling. I need accomodation in Rome from 9/15 to 9/18, then again on 9/25 and 9/26.
I have Rick Steves book and I guess still confused about neighborhoods, so I appreciate the alternative suggestions to the Spanish Steps. Looks like I have some more research to do.
I'll try the hotels and neighborhoods you've all suggested.
Grazie!

We were in Rome in April and would recommend something near Piazza Navona, especially if the Vatican and St Peters are in your plans.

If you stayed in the vicinity of the Pantheon/Campo di Fiori you would be more centrally located.

Personally, I think the Spanish steps are very over rated -- it is just a staircase --- but it is a mecca for tourists -- lots and lots of tourists. And it is not centrally located at all. Very close to the Borghese gardens and somewhat closer to the Vatican. The area around the Pantheon would be more centrally located. I think you need to spend some time with a map of Rome and a good guidebook.
