Where to stay in Rome?

Hi, this will be my 2nd visit to Rome. First time we stayed right by the Vatican. Any suggestions on a different neighborhood to stay? I am leaning towards Trastevere, Pantheon, or north Rome by Villa Borghese. All opinions are welcome.
Thank you,
Ann Marie

We stayed at the Hotel Regno this past February. Near the Pantheon on the Via del Corso. Friendly, helpful staff, elevator, clean, nice breakfast. The taxis/private cabs were on strike and the bus stop was half a block away. We were so central that we really could walk everywhere, but took the bus to save a few steps here and there.

I stayed on Piazza Farnese once and found this area to be a great location - near campo di fiori but not right in the middle of the crowds there, easy walk to the Pantheon area and also easy walking to Trastevere and also not far from a bus hub at Largo Argentina. Great area to walk around in, pretty touristy but not to the level of the Spanish Steps/Trevi fountain areas.

That said I also like the feel of Trastevere. I don't find it too far out, especially for a second visit when you already know the layout of the city a bit. The neighborhood is big, I mostly mean the section in the general vicinity of Santa Maria di Trastevere.

Outside of the city proper, I'd personally look south in Albano,
Castel Gandolfo, Rocca Secca, Colli Albani, Frascati, Lago di Nemi.
That sort of thing.

IMHO, those locations are much too far from center if the intent is to explore the city itself. The OP (based on a previous post) has only 2.5 days in Rome, and intends to take an after-dark bike tour the day they arrive.

We've also stayed an easy walk Termini (roughly the Quirinale) on one of our trips and thought it was a great location.

I stayed twice at the B&B Arco dei Tolomei in Trastevere and it is right over the Tiber island bridge and convenient to everything. They have a lovely breakfast too.

I usually stay near the main train station - also a bus station and easy to get to just about anywhere. Walked to the Colosseum area too.
I stay at small hotels ( Contila and Sonya ) are my faves.
I feel very safe there as a solo traveler walking to restaurants and the station alone in the evenings.
I like the ease of public transportation and variety of restaurants in the area.

We stayed in an apartment just around the corner from the Pantheon. I would definitely do that again. Close to everything, great restaurants.

I stayed in the Monti neighborhood last October and thought it was a great location. Near the Cavour metro station. I liked it because it was close to the metro, (long) walk to the Coliseum and Trevi Fountain, even all the way to Spanish Steps and Centro Storico. The hotel was "95 Rooms in Rome". If money is no object I would probably stay near the Pantheon.

Trastevere and Pantheon are both good.
In spite of people may tell you, the Termini station area is getting seedier and seedier by the day. I would not let my wife stay in that area alone. My female relatives living in Rome avoid it now in the evenings, unless in the company of a man.

The last couple of years I've stayed in the Monti area, between via Cavour and via del Colosseo. Hotel is family-run, very nice breakfast, 24-hour front desk, and very inexpensive for Roma.

You didn't mention what your budget will be, but this is a place to consider. Hotel Fontanella Borghese. We have stayed there several times and have always been pleased. It is not a "luxury" hotel, but it is very nice and the location is great. The staff is very friendly and helpful. One can walk to Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Nuvona, even Vatican city. We always send an email directly with our request for a booking and we get an answer back in 24 hours or less. If you decide to book, ask for a room overlooking the court yard as rooms overlooking the side street can get noisy. The web site is www.fontanellaborghese.com. They also have a sister hotel closer to the Pantheon called Hotel Due Torri.

We have stayed at Hotel Due Torri several times and will stay there again in October. The hotel is very nice (quiet area) but not fancy--nice breakfast is included in the room rate. Great staff and excellent location. Short walk to Pantheon, Navonna, and many excellent restaurants.

I'd say go where your budget can afford you to go, even Termini. It's getting harder to avoid any part of Rome at night cause it gets dark so early here. I'm routinely out in the dark because I had business outside of the center.

And I'm Ok, even walking home to Monti, I'm Ok. It's Not just Termini anymore. We all had to spread out. Rome is more populated than ever, but I'm Ok. There are always so many people out and about everywhere and that's a good thing. Even when I am alone I'm still Ok.

It's still Rome, even Termini has that Mercato Centrale area that keeps it hopping and lively. It's more alive than ever day and night. This city is my Rock.
