Where to stay in Pompeii?

We're planning on spending a night in Pompeii, and was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions as to where to stay - hotel, B'n'B, room, etc
Thanks! Scott

Sorrento is just a 1/2 hour train ride away - would you consider that?

Scott,

Check out Hotel Amleto. We stayed there 2 nights and toured the ruins on the full day between. The young man at the desk at the time was Antonio. Prompt response with email, sending us confirmation and a map. The room was just as shown on the website, bathroom big and very nice. Hotel is 1 1/2 blocks from town squareand cathedral. It is very nice to stroll and sit around the town square. Nice relaxing town after being in Italian cities. The first night we ate at Mimi's Rest. Do NOT eat there!
2nd night we asked at the desk for a recommendation and got a Great one, I just can't find the name in my notes.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay at Amleto again. And we both liked the town. Have fun wherever you stay.

Several guidebooks advised against staying in Pompeii. We have opted to stay in Caserta. It's near the Autostrada, about 20 min. north of Naples. We booked a quad room at the Novotel for 80 euros a night. There are several other hotels. Use tripadvisor top find other hotels. We have stayed in Novotels in other parts of Europe with great success. Plus Caserta boasts the "Versailles of Italy", which sounded like fun. We didn't want to drive all the way to Sorrento to stay 1-2 nights just to have a base to visit Pompeii and Naples. We're seeing Pompeii between Florence and Rome. The Caserta option saves us a lot a driving on $9 a gallon gas.

If your stay includes a Saturday night, I would choose Pompeii. The energy in the town square when everyone comes out for a walk at 9PM was palpable. I thought that there was a festival going on, but the desk man at the Ameleto, told us that it was a weekly event.
