We will be spending 4 nights in Naples in May.
What area of Naples is the best area to stay in? Is 4 nights enough when we plan to do day trips to Pompei, Sorrento, and Capri also?
Linda, Gotta ask- Naples for 4 nights? Are you being held captive? Family there? These are the only possibilities that come to mind.
We are a couple age 60+ who recently stayed four nights in Naples (our second trip there), renting an apartment in the Spanish quarter. We have also stayed near the train station (helpful when you're doing a lot of day trips). Yes, knowing some Italian helps, but Naples is a fascinating city. It will be easier to visit when (if?) the new metro line connecting to the train station is completed.
Stay in Sorrento and daytrip out of there. See many previous discussions here on the merits of Sorrento over Naples. Here is the most recent: http://tinyurl.com/NaplesVSorrento Happy travels.
On our trip to Naples, we based ourselves in Sorrento. From there, we visitied Positano, Amalfi and Capri. Also took the Circumvesuviano to Pompeii and Naples. Pretty easy to get around from Sorrento. If you are flying into Naples, take advantage of the Curreri bus to Sorrento (if that is where you decide to stay.) It cost €10 one way. It's a very comfortable bus and you'll be in Sorrento in about one hour. I really loved Naples. It's truly a diamond in the rough. And the pizza!!!
Staying overnight in Naples on July 2nd. We are staying at the RS recommended Hotel Potenza.
