We'll be visiting CT in May 2015 and are looking for recommendations for a quiet place in Monterosso. Preferably close to beach or at least overlooking ocean. Any favorites out there?
ben,
It would help to have some idea on your criteria for price and comfort level. A few hotels you could look at.....
- Hotel Villa Steno - my favourite hotel in Europe! It's located above the main part of the "old town" so a very quiet location and not really too far from the beaches. It's a bit of a hike to get to with luggage, but once checked-in, there's a short-cut through the garden. Book as early as possible!!!
- Hotel Pasquale - a "sister" property to Villa Steno and located right along the main street leading into the "old town". Again, book early!!!
- Hotel Villa Adriana - at the far end of the "new town". Very comfortable and they serve a nice breakfast.

I don't know how up-to-date it is, but it should be reasonably current. One point to note is that many of the lodgings in that area will be closed for the season now, so it could take several days to get a reply.
Hi Ben -
"Close to the beach" and "quiet" don't necessarily go together but you might take a look at La Spiaggia:

It is about as close to the beach as you can be, and also a very easy walk from the train station and some good local restaurants ( Cantina di Miky is just a couple of doors down: recommended). Rooms are small and breakfast is basic but it's very clean, has an elevator, the price was right, and we enjoyed our balcony overlooking the water very much (must request!!!). We also stayed there in the month of May and were not at all bothered by noise at night even though it's right on a small street.
As Ken mentioned, I believe they're closed in the off season so it may take a day or two to get a response, and they only take cash payment.
If everything you like in Monterosso is booked (although May shouldn't be peak season yet), you can stay outside the Cinque Terre in the next town, Levanto or even better, Bonassola. They are just a handful of minutes away from Monterosso, by train. (the Bonassola station is closer to the beach than the Levanto station, which is a walk uphill).
If you like bycicle riding there is a wonderful paved bike path along the coast from Bonassola to Framura (and I think from Bonassola to Levanto) that is much more relaxing than the Cinque Terre hiking trails,
Another vote for La Spiaggia and Cantina di Miky! You can email them in advance and ask for a room with a sea view. I did and I got it! The other advantage is that it is in the "new town" part of Monterosso-a very easy walk from the train station. In fact, you walk on the boardwalk itself to get to the hotel. The breakfast was good and the owner was very charming and has great restaurant recommendations within 5T itself and even at our next stop in Milan.
We LOVED Manuel's Guest House. Absolutely the highlight of our Italian trip 2 years ago. Friendly, strikingly beautiful views, a patio that deacons for you to come and enjoy a glass of wine in the evenings. You will have to walk lots of stairs to get there, but that is part of the fun and puts you in a relatively quiet spot with breathtaking overlooks. You can't go wrong!!!
