Where to Stay in Montefalco

We intend to visit Montefalco in mid-October. Can anyone recommend a place to stay? While we will have a car I think we may prefer to stay in town. Also, we're debating on just how long to stay. We will definitely want to sample the wines (not necessarily a wine tour) and visit the ruins at Carsulae. Would two nights here be enough?

Check out Genius Loci Country Inn. Montafalco is very small but has a few good restaurants. The Inn is about a 5 minute drive and is equal distance to Bevagna. Awesome views and great people.

I enjoyed my three night stay at Hotel degli Affreschi within the walls of this small and serene hilltown.
Make sure you visit beautiful Bevagna, as well as Spello, Spoleto, and... Don't miss going to Assisi!

Two nights should be enough to see Montefalco and Bevagna, but I suppose that depends on what time you arrive to Montefalco. I didn't have a car so it took longer to get to places via public transportation, so I chose to stay three nights.

Can't help with places to stay in Montefalco, but I might suggest staying closer to Carsulae in beautiful San Gemini. We rented a villa there which was out of this world, but it has a 1-week minimum stay requirement. I'm sure there are other places in the lively town. Only 5 minutes' drive to Carsulae, which was fantastic - a once booming Roman city on a major trade route, and a site that no one visits. I was nearly alone there on both my visits. You can also tour the archeology excavation labs and they have a great mini-museum of finds from the site. I'm glad it's on your list.

I know you said maybe no wine tours but it can be hard to get into the small wineries in Umbria on your own. I highly, highly recommend Gusto Wine Tours. Mark took us on a day tour of 3 small wineries and included a fabulous private lunch. We would never have seen or learned (or eaten) as much and as well on our own.
