Where to stay in Milan one night

We are a family of 4, 2 parents with 2 young adult children. We are spending our last day and night in Milan to attend the Sunday may 17 inter Milan vs juventus soccer game. We arrive at Milano centrale from monterosso at 10am and will have luggage. The soccer match is at San siro at 3pm and our flight back to the U.S. is at 10 am on Monday may 18. Does it make the most sense to book a room/rooms at hotel near Milano centrale, drop our luggage and then head to match and then return for night - then take Milano centrale to malpensa early Monday. Or would it make more sense to book a room near airport? I am really struggling with the logistics of transportation in time allotted. Any suggestions of areas and specific hotels would be greatly appreciated.

Lucky you. My logic, not knowing the transportation system all that well, is to do as you indicated--stay near Milano Centrale. This avoids an unnecessary, as I see it, trip to Malpensa and back into the city. We stayed at Hotel Florida which is a good 3-star hotel with a nice included breakfast and is about 2 blocks from Milano Centrale. Others that might know the public transportation better may have a different opinion. And still others will have hotel favorites in the neighborhood. Have a great trip.

Thank you so much for your reply. I think this is the most logical way, but still welcome additional thoughts/opinions. So far the hotel Florida, hotel Garda and hotel Berna are all booked when I go to online travel sites. These are the 3 most recommended thru this forum and Rick steves books . So any additional suggestions of hotels is most appreciated. I want to find a very reputable hotel as we will probably need to have them hold our luggage since we will arrive prior to check in time. Wondering if online sites show no availability if I might have luck calling hotels directly?

  • We stayed at Hotel Palazzo delle Stelline which is conveniently located near the Cadorna train station.
  • We actually left most of our luggage at this hotel for 3 days while

we traveled to Varenna (Lake Como) & upon our return our luggage
    was intact.

  • This hotel is in the city center, so you can walk or take tram/Metro
to the Duomo & Sforzesco Castle.

  • According to Rome2rio, San Siro Stadium is only 3.1 miles from this
hotel, so I'd suggest taking a taxi that will cost you $10-$12.

  • You can take the 'Malpensa Express' (ME) from Cadorna train station
to Malpensa Airport & it only takes about 30 minutes (much faster
than ME from Milano Centrale which takes 52 minutes). The ME train runs every 30 minutes.

  • We took the 7:28 train & arrived at Malpensa Airport at 8am as our flight was at 10:30am.

  • The hotel staff called for a taxi the morning of our flight & it took less than 5 minutes to get to train station (it only cost us €4.5)

  • Here is the website to the hotel: http://www.hotelpalazzostelline.it/en

If you need more information regarding hotel, you may send me a PM.

Have a great trip!

Edit: Check Malpensa Express train schedules here: http://www.trenord.it/EN/

Make sure you type 'Milano Nord Cadorna' & 'Malpensa Aeroporto' when using above website.

You might look for a hotel near Milano Porta Garibaldi station.
1) It is on the new "Purple" Metro line with direct trains to San Siro stadium.
2) You can pick up the first Malpensa Express train from there to the airport at 6:34 am and get you to the airport by 7:16 am for you 10 am flight.
Porta Garibaldi is not too far from Centrale, 2 stops on the Metro, but under the circumstances, I'd say get a cab.
But anything around Centrale would work too. Take the "Green" Metro Line to Porta Garibaldi and change to the "Purple" line there. The Malpensa Express train, of course, originates at Centrale at 6:25 am.
Try booking.com. You just need a comfortable place for the gang for the night convenient to transport

Responses are much appreciated. I think we are taking Priscilla's suggestion as a convenient trip to malpensa in the morning is important. Very helpful suggestions and having never been to Milan, these were options I would not have known without your input! Thank you.

And you might give us a post-trip report about the match--did the transportation plan work out okay, how did you get tix, how was the stadium, etc., etc. Thanks.

Atramutolo,

You can easily get to Cadorna train station from Milano Centrale via the Metro.

You will need to take the M2 green line toward Abbiategrasso/Assago & get off at the 5th stop ( Cadorna)

See Metro map here: http://www.atm.it/en/ViaggiaConNoi/Pages/SchemaReteMetro.aspx

Having said this, it may be more convenient to take a taxi from Milano Centrale to your hotel since you will have luggage with you.

I forgot to mention this on previous post...

I'd suggest buying the 'Malpensa Express' train tickets (€12pp) at the train station (we purchased them at Cadorna Station @ the Trenord ticket office--no line! ), the day before you plan to travel to the airport.

Here's another tip...
When you get in the taxi from hotel to Cadorna Station, tell the driver you will be taking Malpensa Express (ME) train & he should drop you off right outside the 'Malpensa Express' entrance to the station.

You can see it here on google map: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Milano+Cadorna/@45.468302,9.174324,3a,75y,4.73h,85.69t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sI1dh6vKzg5kkZxVwO5ZHcg!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x4786c1502726bdad:0x813fefc2e5e07786

The ME train departs from platform 1 or 2.

Enjoy your trip!

Milan Hilton is a perfect choice (less than a block from Milano Centrale). It is a refined hotel with a friendly & professional Milanese staff who speak English beautifully. We arrived by train from Nice (at midnight) & felt comfortable walking to the hotel with our luggage. Like you, we were in Milan for a day & had a morning flight out of Malpensa. We took the shuttle bus directly from Milano Centrale to the airport....very well priced & efficient. I would recommend this, rather than staying near the airport, as the airport buses run frequently & you will have an opportunity to experience some of Milan (which has a different vibe than the rest of Italy). Enjoy your trip!
