Where to stay in Florence

We are curently in Rome and will be heading to Florence for 3 weeks. We are in the heart of Trastevee in Rome and Love the location however the appt leaves a little to be desired. It would be nice to have an outside sitting area. We are moving on to Florence in a few days and want to know a area of town that is lively and that would have a nice comfortable apptt. I mainly looking for suggestions of areas in Florence so I can find a suitable appt. I would like to have where there is shops lots of people and close to train or transportation as we don't drive

Best I can suggest is look at booking.com ( or whatever site you like) and apply the filters for what you want.

On what looks to be really short notice, your choices may be limited.

Good luck

Based solely on your criteria (shops, lots of people, close to transportation), the Santa Maria Novella area would be a good match. Something near the Central Market would also work, although I think that area would be noisier than others. You might also like the Santo Spirito area (or the part of Oltrarno between Santo Spirito and the Arno) provided you don't mind a 15-20 minute walk to the train and bus stations. My experience is that prices drop and availability goes up in November, so you'll probably be able to find somthing suitable even last-minute. I always look for apartments offering weekly rates, as they tend to be a better value.

What about the Oltrarno area? It's kind of like Trastevere. . . both are 'the other side of the river' - Tevere in Rome, Arno in Florence. It's more residential so a little quieter and with shops that locals use for day-to-day stuff. It's about a 10-20 minute walk to the train station, about the same to the Duomo and most other sights - depending on where exactly you are.
